Toxic masculinity. They’ll say something along the lines of “No man anywhere can be trusted with a child because they all engage in domestic violence”

My brother married a half Mexican girl. Her Mexican grandmother constantly put him down and slammed him in Spanish thinking he couldn’t understand her. She thought it was horrible that her granddaughter had married and had kids with a corn fed Midwestern white boy. In a bit of irony, my sister in law was unable to go see her on her deathbed or attend her funeral because the country her grandmother held as superior to the U.S. had been ripped apart by cartel violence and was too dangerous to visi…

It took my grandpa nearly 20 years to begrudgingly refer to a Glock as a “good weapon”. And I think the only reason he conceded that point was because he saw my brother and I acquire a few over that time and they never catastrophically failed like he expected them to do, despite being abused and used for things that would have killed a 1911 long ago. My mother got $145/wk from my dad and spent about $25/wk on groceries and pissed away the rest. My grandparents bought my clothes and gave me lunch money. Dad paid for any medical expenses. $145/wk might not sound like a lot, but this was in the mid 80s-early 90s, so it was probably closer to $280-300/wk in today’s dollars.
