You are very correct.... What I meant to say and what came out was completely different..... The spate of crimes against women is tremendously high and is perpetuated because of our fiercely patriarchal society, victims are not allowed a say, v victim blaming and so called izzat (honour) of the family.... Compounded by the fact that we try to defend all wrongs by saying image of the country takes a hit..... Two wrongs don't make a right.....

Not saying that but gangrapes and rapes are more common in India.....with the low conviction rate, and victim blaming.... take the unnao rape case in any other country that fellow would be behind bars, but he is contesting elections here in India..... its just that we in India get defensive about something that is wrong....countries have taken out advisories, telling single women to not travel alone or trust unknown people.....

I agree on the last part totally...blame the guy, But the former I don't (sadly though). India has a long way to go to accommodate individual sensibilities. It's just too ducked up.....

This post I guess is relevant in the Indian subcontinent context, where the number of bride killings has been in the rise.... Mainly due to the ducked up social system here, people consider it better to kill their spouse than to part ways...... I once had a co-worker who was accused of burning his wife alive in the same house with his kids..... He claimed to the police that she was depressed and suicidal, the parents of the woman did not persue this fellow as they felt who would take care of the…
