I can imagine why, really. But it's also at odds with hearing about a man who has to grind for months at the expense of other things in order to afford something that is only a symbol of the real thing that his girlfriend is, I'm assuming, after. The man and his girlfriend may both be saints, but what I got out of the story is that, in these women's eyes, the cost of a ring is more important than this man's stress/mental well being. These women may be nice people otherwise, and may be educated i…

I see you enjoy arguing semantics. What description would you prefer I use? You and I are not friends, nor do we share ideologies, but I considered your response to be a reasonable one. I think those women in particular are being unreasonable in this situation because, in the anecdote, there appears to be a lack of empathy. That is my basis for using the word. Should I have used the term "reasonable people"? Probably not. But I would have used the word "reasonable" anyway. In this context, they …

Okay, bad wording. I will just keep it to "reasonable people that don't necessarily identify with TRP" then.

I like you.

I don't really agree with a lot of what is said in this sub, but your last paragraph is great. It should be on posters, plastered everywhere.

I may be out of line here, but I feel like your response would have been the same as an actual feminist's response- or just any reasonable person's response. I am strongly feminist and I would have put those women in their place too.

Fair enough.

Yeah. I understand now that I was taking sexual value to mean absolute value.

I see. That is far less jarring than what I originally understood. Thanks for the explanation.

Thanks for the insight, though I guess I was framing my scenario more in terms of their functional role in society as a whole, not just in mating/family (though I suppose being a wife does sort of answer my question). What are your thoughts there? I think you're right in saying that one can't have it all- though I think that goes for everyone. I don't think any family man can confidently say that they have had enough family time, while still working the hours needed to support a family. It's not…

I didn't mean for that part to sound narcissistic; it just seemed to me that that would be the only conclusion as I generally see no other reference to women's "value" (i.e. no other types of value, be it social, in the workforce, etc. other than sexual). Thanks for the insight, though.

This has largely been my experience too. I'd love to be friends with more women, but since I am in STEM, I mostly am around men. Pretty sure most of my close male friends are not attracted to me (they mostly have girlfriends, and we are definitely not each others' types). Also, good on you for being a good wingwoman. I am a terrible wingwoman, so I have given up on trying.

So no women are interested in economics, physics, history, philosophy, sports, math, art, music, or culture? My, my. I will take your word for it, then.

So, genuinely curious here - does anything change in TRP if she is the breadwinner? Or is her value absolutely lowered by her partner count and age?

I already conceded I was wrong to have pushed (below). Again, however, I state that there was no "feminist" agenda here. Just my jumping to conclusions and being an asshole.

Very well put.

Ah, I actually never saw it that way. That is genuinely a new perspective for me. Edit: I don't think I ever said anything in the original thread with the intent of silencing OP in order to continue discussion on women's victimization, but if that's been your experience, I can easily see how you felt that way. Edit2: I do concede that I shouldn't have pushed the second time, but it wasn't from a "feminist" standpoint; it was just my thinking of the OP as an asshole, and then being an asshole in …

Honestly, it depends on how well or badly the initial comment was worded. When all you have text and you can't convey tone, word choice is important. Obviously I'm not a model for accurate communication, but I can recognize when I have done a bad job. I have been abused in my past as well, and it is the reason my partner and I understand each other so well. Had he responded to my stories with "well, mine was more violent and happened over a longer period of time", it would make me feel like he l…

Well, since you're the only reasonable person breaking this whole thing down and responding to me I will say this: I cannot change that I thought it was a statement of belittlement. However, you are right in that he stated it was not, and my interpretation of his protestation may not have been correct. Edit: I don't see how what I said backs you up, but maybe I didn't explain myself clearly enough.

I didn't mean to come across as superior or petty- but do you also see how I could have taken OP's original comment (linked) the way I did? To me, OP was not saying "I/Men suffer too"; instead I saw "I/Men suffer more". That was the reason I made my initial comments. I do agree that from your perspective, Anoushka should have mentioned abuse is a universal thing. It was not my intention to belittle male abuse, especially since my own partner has been on the receiving end of physical abuse by a w…

I disagree with you in this instance, and I stand by my statement. I have very rarely in my life thought of myself as a victim, and would not be where I am, nor in this subreddit defending my stance, if I felt that way. I genuinely feel that of multiple groups are suffering, that the issues should be brought to light in a way that doesn't require the belittlement of someone else's issues, whoever it may be. I did feel like the OP was doing this, and, again, if I was wrong, I am sorry. I state th…

Hi. I'm the person OP has issue with. Honestly, I consider myself an open minded person, and if the author had defended his point reasonably instead of calling in the cavalry here, I would have conceded. I hadn't read into the article and felt it was largely about child abuse, not women-specific abuse (even though being a woman was mentioned). I did genuinely think he was competing with a story about child abuse. I did also say that I felt bad for him, having been beaten up, and I agree that men…

It's probably because seeing a man with a woman makes other women feel safer. That's how I feel, anyway.

Okay, this is going to be anecdotal since it's my own experience, but generally speaking I nearly always look at other WOMEN - mostly to check out what they are wearing etc. I am not sure why I do this but I know a lot of my friends also do it; must be some sort of weird conditioning. I know in the past, men that some of them were with misconstrued this as my checking them out from afar, but that was generally not the case. Might not always be the case for you, but I guarantee that at least 40% …
