That is true, but from an evolutionary perspective the tail itself doesn't really confer a survival advantage. It's like the difference between a 7 figure stock portfolio and a Ferrari...both indicate wealth and likely attract mates, but only one would be considered a good investment. Having said that...yes, that's probably the most likely explanation for big 'ol tiddies.

Not necessarily, sometimes a trait is sexually selected even though it has very little to do with survival of the species. Peacocks are the classic example where it's thought that a larger tail signals increased health because you're healthy enough to support a ridiculous appendageike that tail in spite of the obvious drawbacks from growing something like that.
