Lawyer is there to make sure you don't get hit any harder than necessary. My ex and I agreed to divorce without lawyers but she got one just to do all the paper work for us. I consulted a lawyer on my own to make sure I understood what the laws said about my specific situation. In my state there are formulas, but if both parties make over $115k then child support can be waived. I never would have known if I didn't have a lawyer. The lawyer also let me know that the likelihood of her getting alim…

I met my ex at work shortly after her first divorce. She was very vocal in sharing how happy she was that she was getting her old last name back. Fast forward a decade and now she’s keeping my last name. It still bothers me a little but it’s dwindling over time.

I've had sleep issues my entire life but I never realized how much worse things had gotten during my marriage. My first night in my new place I slept like a baby for ten straight hours, it was glorious. I still have occasional issues but overall my sleep is now better than it's ever been. I'm also working out more and hitting new personal bests in lifting regularly.

Get a lawyer ASAP, the best one you can afford. A good lawyer will make sure you get a fair shake in all this chaos and they'll be able to walk you through the laws in your state. I think it's best to go in with an idea of what you'd like to have happen and the lawyer can let you know how realistic your goals are.

I was in a similar place last summer. Things were awful between my wife and I but the idea of not seeing my son every day was unimaginable. I ultimately decided to divorce (official last week). I'll be honest, there are times when it really sucks. Today was my son's first day of school and he's going home to his mom's house instead of mine. I'll call him to see how his day was but it's not the same as having him come home to my house. We're mostly amicable so it's not awful but definitely not id…

Yes, get a lawyer, even if it's just for consultation. I'm recently divorced and we were pretty amicable for the most part. We had a lawyer that she found just to process the paper work for us. However, I did have a lawyer that I consulted throughout the process and I can't recommend it enough. She told her lawyer the parts of our situation that helped her cause so the draft decree was not right for our situation. My lawyer heled me out a lot by letting me know how the laws in my state applied t…

The impact on alimony has been discussed here already so I won’t comment. However, if the inheritance comes in while you’re married and the money goes into a joint account it does become marital property. At that point it could absolutely be a bargaining chip. As my STBX and I were negotiating she dropped her claim to a lot because I agreed to split the equity in the house (I bought it, only in my name, pre-marital purchase).

And this is why I'll never get married again. No one will ever be able to convince me that it's worth the risk.

One thing I would suggest before blowing things up is talking to a lawyer. Take your evidence to the lawyer and understand how to best protect yourself legally before blowing things up. My only other thought is that if you are going to blow things up the way you're suggesting be ready for things to get ugly. In my experience women in this situation will get petty and vindictive as soon as they realize they're under attack. Good luck with this situation, sorry to hear she put you in this spot.

My son is 5 and I'm doing 2/2/3 with my ex. He's not in kindergarten until August so we have no school schedules to worry about yet. I hated the seven on/seven off schedule. It was just way too much time without seeing him for me personally. With 2/2/3 I get enough time to take care of other things when he's with his mom but still get to see him frequently. I understand school making it hard to continuously switch so I guess we'll cross that bridge when the time comes.

My STBX said a lot of the same stuff, but as we progressed she wanted more and more stuff to go to her. She just wanted to get a lawyer to process the paperwork for us. She got the lawyer and I wasn't even able to talk to the lawyer. I let her know that I was going to have a consultation with a different lawyer just to get questions answered and she freaked out. Then she let me know she wanted more stuff. I knew what we were both entitled to since I'd had that consultation and I knew what I was …

Could not agree more. I have many days where I just want to sit home and eat junk or drink beer. I've been making myself go workout instead and I always feel amazing after.

I had the same experience with water usage. My wife left and took her two daughters with her. The week they left I got a $500 water bill (our water is billed quarterly). When I got the next bill for just myself and my son it was right around $100 for the quarter.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
