Thanks for the comment, you’ve given me a lot to think about. I live in a very blue HCOL state. I would say this culture here supports moving in since it’s so expensive out here, but I see a lot of perpetually unmarried (with kids) couples living together. He lives in the mid-west, I’m assuming religious pressure accelerates marriage out there. We are both not religious. We have talked on several of the points you brought up, but I will definitely steal these as future conversation topics, I rea…

Thank you for the comment! He has emphasized that I would have a totally separate account. He’s mentioned that if I ever wanted to leave him I could feel empowered to do so, which was a green flag for me. He has assured me he wants me to feel independent with the money and not trapped in any way. He told me he wants to set everything up so it’s as healthy as possible with the best possible shot at this working.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, I do want to go into this with a sober and clear mind. I’m 26 and he’s 32. The allowance wasn’t his lead when we met or anything, we want me to stay home once married with kids for sure. Maybe it’s a bit rash to have this dynamic before marriage. I’m going to heavily consider that. The distance is hard, but I’m taking 4-5 more months before moving. I need that time to make peace with it and continue to get to know him. He’s coming to my state next month to me…

Thanks for you comment, I will definitely take it too heart ! I’m 26 and he’s 32. I’m not moving tomorow, I told him I want to take 4-5 more months to save money and he has to come to my state to meet my family. He thinks this is perfect

I should have put this in the post: but my plan is I will move in 4-5 months and he has to come to my state to meet my family. I have already been to his state and met his family as well.

I get what you are saying, but he’d be handing me a check every month where I would control the money… I work in a restaurant right now, so I’m not really sacrificing my career trajectory. If we broke up I could easily get right back into that industry.

That’s fair, it’s just that we have only been dating for a couple of months. I wouldn’t personally feel comfortable with a marriage proposal at this stage, even though I can totally see myself marrying this man, and it’s something we have talked about and both want for our (near) future. I think it’s very sensible for me to consider all of this though! Would you suggest me asking about his timeline for a proposal and marriage ?

He wants me to be happy and have the pride that he’s providing me with a good life, my joy would spill over to him. He wants me to make the house a home, and do all the things he can’t do while working a full time job outside of the home. Once we get married and have kids, it’s more about the practicality of me staying home with the kids and taking care of the home.

He hasn’t in the past as he couldn’t afford it then. I know this sub generally frowns upon moving in before marriage but it’s something we are comfortable with. Would you suggest me keeping a job before marriage ? The ironic thing is that I’d probably be making more money if he ‘hired’ me instead.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
