From a cursory glance I'd say fractionation theory is such a case. I'd say stick to the basics and if new gimmicks somehow prove to be better than the basics THEN consider using them.

Props to the OP. Ultimately we face all our greatest challenges, and I do mean ALL of them, alone. No wife, no parents, no friends of whatever kind. They can sometimes provide emotional support or feedback but that's it. Not to mention they can be misleading or like crabs in a barrel. So you are better off removing the influence. I'm not suggesting not having friends, just don't involve them in your life struggles and challenges, cause that could actually hurt your progress.
