It's a deterrent to any one else thinking of committing the same crime, that's why judges often try to "make examples" of people. Many people would also be agree with it being used for retribution for the victim's sake. That's why you see people here saying it's not enough, retribution for the victim and as a deterrent against other false rape charges.
