Queensland (Australia) schools have students' assessment go to moderation, where each big graded assessment is also given to two random teachers elsewhere in the state for a double blind grading. It pertains to your story because I went a full grade higher in some of those moderated assessments because my English teacher expected more from me, her words.

I was about 2/3 of the way through (the entire article; I did read past the satire) and it was too painful to read. As a man, as a research scientist, as a victim, as a philosopher. It's too much seeing all of the check and balances that we use to keep our epistemics clean being forgone for me, specifically.

My main problem with the idea of "Toxic Masculinity" is that it places all agency on men to be the ones to change things. It also doesn't help that toxic masculinity's role in a lot of men's problems are overstated at best and completely unsubstantiated at worst.

A woman who is threatened by her boyfriend / husband having an emotional attachment to someone else. There are people who take the emotional bond to be a precursor to cheating or to leaving one relationship for another; I've actually heard the term "emotional cheating" before from people who were serious. This isn't helped by the fact that a lot of men confuse sex with intimacy; either way, he is isolated and can't really "share" with anybody else besides their partner. This can overwhelm her, b…

I've worked in domestic violence; my practice uses a model similar to Duluth but with genders stripped. This reflects the fact that unequal power balances can occur in any relationship. Even a heteronormative relationship can have two distinct power imbalances which go in opposite directions. For example, a man is the breadwinner financially, so to some extent feels entitled to control his wife's behaviour, but she intentionally monopolises his emotional needs so that his sense of security depen…

...paternal uncertainty is resolved by providing resources to the woman, meaning it's in her interests to stick around him exclusively to ensure the best outcome for her child. This is also supported by every social interaction that results in a spike of oxytocin. If this sort of domination was selected for, there would be a lot more rape than there is, but it still makes no sense, because so much of what humans consider consent to be will act to facilitate childrearing...

Notice that the report gives a percentage of women who dislike their bodies (26%), but no quantitative basis behind asserting that men make women more uncomfortable with their bodies than other women. They aren't even pretending to provide a statistically significant, controlled study. I defer to the Jay Leno quote, that "Women are more comfortable changing in front of men than other women. They found that while women are very judgemental, men are just grateful." It's also worrying that no numbe…

I'm a male massage therapist, but all of my clients are gay / MSM men and they pay a premium for a "sensual" service. I do all of my friends a G-rated massage for free, girls too. Because I relieve tension in a particular way (getting rid of knots and providing ambiguous arousal at the same time), most of the guys end up hard and I've had more girls quietly ask me if I'm really gay than I care to count. (The guys typically say they can't get up because they're too relaxed, then when things are q…

Nothing inclines me further towards thinking that feminism is, fundamentally, about denying the agency of women than the attitude of feminists towards women who willingly enter the sex industry. As a sex worker myself, I've only ever felt like it was society's insecurities that ever approached making it degrading. A service for a fee. More transparent than almost every other industry.

I believe that the mind and human behaviour are not inscrutable and can be studied with the scientific method. That is, I believe that psychology is a science. That said, these studies come and go like the wind and individually tend to mean nothing. Probably 95% of published material is trash for one reason or another. People without the skills to critically appraise a study, its sampling, its methodology etc. shouldn't read them, but they still do, especially if it suits their sensibilities.

Gay people who need to stay in the closet are, but all the more reason for everyone to be free with their sexuality, I guess. Closeted gays are still way more likely to commit suicide, more so than a straight man, but once you're out and have people who don't hate on your sexuality, there are a lot of pressures which aren't there, as you say. I'm gay and passionate about MRA because there are so many problems that uniquely affect you guys. MRA issues are issues that affect most of my friends, an…

The main argument people seem to make to establish that the MR movement is homophobic tends to involve the MRA's purported positions on gender roles (and because homosexuality itself transgresses a major aspect of the regular gender role, sexuality is then involved). I think you can defend gender roles and the rights of men without thinking everyone should be pressured to conform to the binary. MRs aren't big fans of self-destructive, toxic masculinity any more than queer activists, but I'd say …

It's a bit of a bind though. There are the normal people who expect chivalry, but you never know when you'll encounter a feminist who gets massively pissed off when you see this sort of thing. So there is a whole contingent of people - people who rape and murder and beat women and children every day, apparently. And instead of, I don't know, calling the police and having this contingent of people brought to account for the actions that they've most certainly done... the best response is to goad these people through the internet. It's as daft as suspecting someone of rape or domestic abuse but instead of calling the police and having them verify the claims and indicting any guilty part…

"I disagree." isn't half of a sentence. The first clue is the little dot just to the right of the last "e". It ends sentences when it's all by itself, most of the time. Go on, look for it. I'll wait. Did you find it? Good. We have a sentence. I didn't pick out one sentence among many paragraphs. In the broadest strokes, peer review isn't about suppressing data - it's about making sure that conclusions are justified given the statistical techniques used and the results obtained. Almost all feedback from peer review is about rewording stuff could have been written in a better way. Controversial, substantiated conclusions are exactly what a journal wants to publish, because breaking new ground increases their prestige - generally measured by the journal's average impact score. I'm not sure how to break this down any more clearly. Heterosexual women can have romantic interest in men. Heterosexual men can't - in doing so, they would cease to be heterosexual men. Therefore, any motivations that a heterosexual woman has to either desire or abhor "men's emotion" that relate to that woman assessing the viability of that man as a partner ... are motivations which heterosexual men do not share.

Yeah; I'm prejudiced against documentaries. This is because I went to college so I'm aware of how worthless they are as academic sources. At this point, you can try to find a peer-reviewed journal article that backs up your beliefs or you can pretend that I'm an anti-straight person "bigot" for not treating a documentary as a real source. Or, rather, you can continue pretending.

I'm not sure where to start with this. Real estate agencies typically serve more than one suburb, and each suburb has multiple agencies. You saw one agency, and you think that they were reluctant to give you paperwork and you think that they didn't give you a place because you're a straight couple. And you think that this implies that gay people in general have control over particular locations in society, and that the smoking gun was, literally, a rainbow flag in someone's window. No. Find me a…

Of the two groups, heterosexual men and heterosexual women, heterosexual women are the only ones who will relate to men in general as romantic partners.
/r/MensRights10/12/12 06:29 AM

Heterosexual men and woman relate to men in different ways: heterosexual men will only be friends, but heterosexual women are the only of the two that will be partners. A man who wants his guy friend to be emotionally open has, I think, different motivations to a woman who might want their partner to be emotionally intimate. The same goes for a guy who wants to stay emotionally distant from his friend[s], or a woman who wants a romantic partner who doesn't need to have an emotional life. This is…

Yeah; I agree with this, too. There exist men who will encourage other men to share, too, and I imagine all four groups to be pretty distinct in their motivations.

I agree that other men contribute, but I know plenty of women who will also shame men for having feelings. I'm not sure who would be doing it "more", but since they seem to do it for different reasons the two causes are orthogonal enough that they should each be addressed on their own terms.

It's great fun omitting the fact that I'm gay from my self-narrative around people I don't know, because it lets me experience the very casually thrown around misandry and heterophobia that people, especially queer people, hold. The idea that a straight acting gay guy is a traitor to queerdom is just another part of demonising masculine qualities, and definitely a men's rights issue. I get that a lot. I've reported the page title for sexually explicit context. There should really be a "Trigger Warning: Rape" before the word "Rape" in "RapeBook" I shudder to think of all those poor brave souls who just can't handle seeing the word "rape" without first seeing "trigger warning:" and then "rape" so that people know which particular trigger they're warning people about.

http://www.law.fsu.edu/journals/lawreview/downloads/304/kelly.pdf roughly even on most fronts, except that male reciprocated violence is more likely to lead to an injury (though women are greater perpetrators of severe, sole-offender violence). apart from that the differences weren't there. but you're certainly right that men do not comprise a minority among victims. men comprise the majority of general violence, which includes, say, being a victim of a random assault.

It depends on the agency. Where I worked, I counselled perpetrators, victims and reciprocal abusers of both genders, but I had to deal with a lot of women asking me whether there were "really" male victims, who they were (really? confidentiality is a thing?), whether any of them were real men, and a lot of general resistance to the idea that women could be abusers. Really, a lot of it seems related to the idea that DV can only present as physical violence which induces visible effects. Oh well. …

People born with other sets of chromosomes exist. Even sex is far more complicated than XX / XY in cases where it is one of those two, though it's absurd to think that every infant's chromosomes are automatically mapped out. The more common situation is birth gender assignment in the case of ambiguous genitals getting it wrong. It's an integral part of the prison industrial complex. Most defendants of criminal charges don't have the resources for a real lawyer who will put concerted time and effort into a case, so prosecution by the state casts a wide net and will pursue conviction even in the knowledge that the evidence probably wouldn't hold up scrutiny in a full trial. Cops and state prosecutors like it because the early plea enables them to bag more heads, securing funding or earning prestige respectively. Defendan…

The methodology is pretty standard for this type of brain mapping. I don't care much for this field of research, because statistical significance in activation of certain areas of the brain really doesn't imply psychological significance in the way that one needs to make a claim like "objectifying is done by the brain in a certain way." I'm not sure what made it a feminist perspective in that there wasn't much about power structures, but it can be concluded that more powerful and richer people stand to benefit from a plea bargain system compared to people who can't afford good legal counsel and time off of work in court. It'd be fine if there wasn't an abundance of alternative (indoor) places that could be freely used, but that's clearly not the case. Still feels a lot more like class warfare than sexism. While the majority of men being homeless means that homelessness issues are men's issues, I think the title should have reflected the law (or had something…

Thanks for that. My understanding of American culture is, at best, acquired through sources such as yourself.

I think that comes with the territory re: reddit being so amerocentric. A big part of American culture, as far as I understand, is that people believe they will get "their day" in court.

I looked around for a while, and this was the most relevant thing I could find: http://www.woofiles.com/dl-311240-7ZjZlKPG-brooksandcolleagues2010.incomeinequalityvsfacialpreference.pdf Essentially, national income equality over time and across cultures was found to be related to female preference for more "masculine" facial structures. The idea is that the traits associated with hypermasculinity are more desirable when the economy isn't doing so well. It's a bit like how there are different str…

There were three tiers of pilot screening. That's all they really needed for the manipulation check; this approach has a pretty low amount of random error for a social psychology study. They gave an open-ended survey asking for traits considered attractive in women, then picked the best ones. Statistical modelling gives us confidence that the sample is representative of how more males would pick. Next, they found GIS hits for those traits. A fresh set of people rated the pictures based on how th…

It's annoying to read the article conceding that evolution happened before various modern inventions. Natural selection has been and always will be happening. Also, alcohol has been around for millenia. Selection pressures from the Himalayas effected differences between Tibetan and Mongolian genetics in a matter of centuries. Stupid stupid stupid. I disagree that it'd be better to get an actress to put on all 88 characteristics - that assumes you can fake something like this and the point in the…

Comparing the justice system screwing over men and the wage system screwing over women is an excellent way to demonstrate how alleged locus of control shifts when the gender changes.

Injustice somewhere is injustice everywhere. MRA's have their priorities as to what they will put energy into fighting for, but our position should be very clear in support of her. edit: misgendered person was misgendered

You did kinda walk into it by saying that your y chromosome protects you from pain. Specific counter-example burn! I've never understood playful wrestling among couples, but if you're going to continue doing this it's probably important that you both know each others' boundaries very well.

She groomed him since birth for 14 years. That's 14 years of time that she had to step back and think "Hey, let's not commit statutory rape". That's the rationale of the excessive sentence, but I'm not really sure what's fair in this context. I don't like the idea of considering a person unsaveable, psychologically. Surely you don't need 40 years of rehabilitation before you can learn about how to appropriately relate to children. 40 years is a huge deterring effect, but it's the certainty of th…

It's weird agreeing with all terms of this, but also wanting marriage equality as a gay man, and anticipating marriage in the future as soon as it's legal and I find a suitable partner. But I think that finding a gay male partner who doesn't have such diseased viewpoints on marriage and partnership will be a lot easier than doing the same for a straight female. So I think the crux of it is helping more men decide not to stick a ring on crazy. And then it becomes a discussion on what "crazy" mean…

By my first sentence, I mean that there is a demand for professional female golf players. I think an important factor is that female sportsmen* are a unique market for sponsorship deals, since that's where a lot of sports money comes from as well. *Yes, I know

I don't disagree. It's just that one would imagine men to be especially aware of what harms themselves, and the specific norms that do this.

He's not suggesting he wouldn't survive in prison. Rape victims sometimes also know themselves as "survivors" of rape, after all. He's being thrown about like a dog toy, not killed. Being raped and being in prison both aren't the same thing as a sprint race. There are ways that you can compare them (which you haven't really outlined, though I'm sure it's "because some people are better at it than other people"). Great. But saying one can't do the first two is very different to saying one can't d…

I wish more men could see the connection between making fun of Justin Beiber not being the right kind of male and the oppressive gender norms that harm all men and hold all men to an impossible standard which will literally kill them. That isn't an indictment of the OP or anyone ITT; it's just the first thing that comes to mind in this sort of thing to me, rather than the gendered double standard. Prison rape jokes are disgusting, too.

Part of it might be due to him having a smaller range of "normal" behaviour in terms of how much anger he's expressing. Think of a scale going from a raised tone to aggressive gestures to yelling to hitting things to hitting you. I don't disagree that there's a double standard of what our culture thinks is acceptable for men and women to act like in an argument, but it is in a feedback loop relationship with the expectation that men are stoic and calm and showing any feeling at all, including an…

Reminds me of every movement, ever, that complains about "concern trolls". If your movement isn't shithouse, then typical "troll" arguments against it can be addressed in one paragraph or less. Or you can link to an FAQ explanation of why, for example, the wage disparity in America along gender lines is largely explained by xyz according to the government's own statistics. Our trolls don't ask us to define our position; our trolls link to us saying that we're a subreddit for legalising rape.

The majority of comments I've seen haven't been women laughing at the man's misfortune, but a lot of men and women have written saying that he "deserved it" for putting himself in this situation. I can't see how this is any different to the "victim shaming" of rape victims being told that they should know how to not be raped.

May I subscribe and post as a male, or is this subreddit a safe space sort of deal? What about just comments? Traffic is traffic, but I'd rather it not lose the focus if your focus is solely "women's perspectives on the MRA".

40% of the study was dropped from analysis because they weren't able to define sexism, but they already had a general atttiude scale for feminist tendencies and that's a better thing to compare with a general ambivalence attitude scale than a single-item self-identification scale. The r between general attitude scales can be as high as .7 while a self-identifiction scale to attitude still scores much lower. That's been known for decades. Furthermore, people were dropped because they self-identif…

Document everything that you can. Get your service provider to verify, on paper, that she's blocked your number. Emails that you've sent to contact her which she has ignored. Your statement that you haven't skype chatted with your daughter. Go to the cop or judge or person authorised to enfoce the court order you mentioned. Fight it.

Yeah, that's the part that makes me feel ill here. No matter what, the daughter should have been able to call upon the support of her family here.
