I wouldn't consider this an FDS movie; it's not actually about getting rid of LVM. I've seen a lot of horror movies/thrillers and this had some of the most disturbing scenes I've ever witnessed - if you're looking for films about women's empowerment I would not recommend this one. I wouldn't say she found her power at the end, I would say her sanity completely shattered.

I agree 100%. Because of this I've started visiting FDS significantly less than before. It used to be almost entirely strategy posts that were helpful and supportive; now whenever I open the front page it's mostly memes/tinder screenshots etc that just don't generate meaningful discussion or help people. It's disappointing. I hope things level out.

100%. Once you're emotionally attached, it's scary how easy it is to rationalize even the most atrocious behaviour. If he's skilled at manipulation, he'll even make you think his behaviour is your fault. Red flags are emergencies!

I've had literally the exact same realizations after finding FDS. It really is like a massive weight is off my shoulders too - it's so liberating and exciting. I can finally live just for myself instead of living to attract a man. I hope you achieve everything you want!

A very important takeaway from this book is that abusers rarely, if ever, change. Even with years of therapy/rehabilitation. The reason they behave that way is because of a fundamental problem with the way they think. So red flags should be taken very seriously - never downplay them or make excuses for poor behaviour.

Yup, I never realized how damaging couple’s counselling can be until reading Lundy Bancroft’s work. I wish there was more awareness about this. So many people have their experiences and feelings completely invalidated by counsellors.

Yup! This is my number one dealbreaker. My ex developed severe halitosis later in our relationship and staight up denied it whenever I tried to tell him (classic narcissist). He had good hygiene too so it might have been a medical issue that he should get checked out. It was so awful that I'm sure he's known as that guy in his workplace. Leaving that bad breath behind was honestly one of the best parts of leaving him. Ugh.

Lol, it's so true. I was seeing a guy and texted him "How are you feeling?" He literally just responded "Sex". I was like what the actual fuck.

That's so brutal. Good dating advice is so important; our relationships affect our lives so much. I wish we were educated from childhood on how to build healthy relationships and recognize toxic traits.

Right!? They do seem so much younger. I've matured and changed so much in the past few years. So a 35 year old wanting to date a 20 year old is just obscene - there's something seriously wrong there!

I just realized that mine taught me literally nothing about dating. I ended up a pick me who put men on pedestals and basically just did everything wrong. I really wish I had received some advice instead of letting my low self esteem guide me. I’m just so glad I found FDS.

That’s true in my experience. I dated this guy outside my race and he constantly had to bring it up and would say “I can’t believe I’m dating a white girl” and that white girls are crazy. He made it into this weird thing and I didn’t like it.

I am 26 and I have dated men 6 years older and 10 years older. The one who was 6 years older was a textbook narcissist. He was a master manipulator and incredibly controlling. There are too many red flags to describe - he displayed every abusive/manipulative behaviour possible (gaslighting, triangulation, constant criticism, name-calling, yelling, intimidation, the list goes on and on). He constantly used the age difference to demean and invalidate me, even though it was only 6 years. He would t…

I know exactly how you feel. Leaving an abuser is an extremely rough experience. But congratulations on getting out - I hope you're doing much better now.

100% right. That's why RPW freaks me out so much - it trains women to take abuse and they don't even realize it. RP tactics are literally emotional abuse tactics. They completely dehumanize women.. It's scary.

That's absolutely right - that's exactly what happened until I reached my breaking point. Thank you so, so much, I really am! I am so glad I found you guys too! I love this sub.

Ridiculous. A couple of years back when I was in a horribly abusive relationship I used to read books that redpillwomen recommended because I thought my behaviour was causing the abuse (It wasn't). I was desperately trying to modify my behaviour because I thought it would make him treat me better. (Of course it didn't - abusers gonna abuse). It puts totally undeserving men on a pedestal and reduces women to objects to do their bidding. The sub only benefits men. It basically teaches women to be …

So much respect for you for leaving at the first sign of disrespect/abuse. You were 100% right to leave and block him. After treating you like that when you were a guest in his home he has no right to be in your life so blocking was the smartest move. That was only the beginning of this type of behaviour - it always escalates, especially if he has a temper. Yuck. He has no business trying to follow you but I've also seen this happen all the time with men who have treated me poorly. They want acc…

What is with all of this choking stuff lately?? I've been seeing this "choke me daddy" garbage popping up. It's actually scary that it's becoming normalized.. Are that many people actually into choking during sex?

Yup! A guy was complaining that I don't eat much and how he "hates people that don't eat" etc etc. Then I gained a little under 5 lbs and he was all like "wow did you gain weight?/wow your legs got bigger/you're bigger than girls i'm used to!" (I was still quite fit). Like just shut up! You can't win.

I've recently come to this conclusion too. I have never really enjoyed sex - my long term partners were awful and selfish to the point where I absolutely dreaded sex (to illustrate, my ex insisted I give him oral sex while I was very ill with the flu - extremely sore throat, fever, everything). Yes, I could have said no but I was a Pick Me and he never, ever should have insisted in the first place. He also didn't believe in ANY kind of foreplay/giving oral sex so you can imagine how fun that was…

Only the abusive and manipulative guys I’ve dated have said something about my breast size. My extremely abusive ex made subtle comments and frequently talked about women with big boobs in order to make me feel insecure. It got to the point where I seriously wanted surgery when I never cared before. He even admitted that he made his ex obsessed with getting breast implants too - and he laughed about it! The guy I dated after my abusive ex also had the audacity to make a few comments. He was also…

True! My brother said that exact thing. He was talking about how a couple of his friends only go after younger women and that he finds it weird and creepy. He said he found early 20s women attractive when he was in his early 20s, but now that he’s turning 30, he finds women his age attractive. The younger ones just seem too young. Men who date well out of their age range often want someone they perceive as naive that they can manipulate/control. I’ve been there and it sucks.

Your comment immediately reminded me of this awful incident. He tracked her down and followed her home based on the reflection of a train station in her eyes in a selfie she posted. The creepiness/depravity is horrifying. We have to be vigilant.

Yup. I sincerely wish I followed this advice with the last guy I dated. I had specifically planned to not get physical with him until a certain period of time had passed. The only reason I did it anyway was because I was drunk. The regret afterward was overwhelming. I have definitely learned my lesson with alcohol - it completely destroys my decision making skills which is pretty terrifying. Be careful out there!

Jesus Christ. I was listening to music with a douchebag I was dating who had insulted my taste in music (even though we listen to similar stuff - he was just trying to put me down). He started playing different songs saying “there’s no way you’ll know who this is”. I named every artist he put on within a few seconds. He was so shocked he actually shook my hand and said he respects me now. Like I had to prove myself to him? It was just very condescending.

Yup. I received a flurry of texts from my abusive ex from an unknown number this morning. I have not spoken to this man in 10 months. I also recently got a strange e-mail out of the blue from another ex with whom I haven't spoken in years. They both did awful things and they just won't back off.

100%. I worked part time in the service industry for many years. The male chefs/cooks were very sleazy towards women (I got sexually harassed a lot), most of them drank/partied to excess, and they would often work 60+ hours per week so you'd almost never have evenings/weekends or holidays with them. They weren't necessarily bad people and but they just weren't dating material. The job is very stressful and a lot of them have bad tempers too. Of course there were exceptions but they were very few…

My friend took my phone and deleted the message thread for me. I was annoyed at first but then I felt like a weight was lifted. I'm so glad she did it - there's nothing to look back on and make myself upset over. It definitely helps with the healing.

I know exactly how you feel. Even a year out, it's hard to believe that I put up with what I did and didn't realize it was even abuse. I knew something was wrong but I always blamed myself and thought I just needed to be "better" to stop him from treating me that way. It's scary to think about. My ex also used exact quotes and examples - it was truly mind-blowing to read and so validating.

Yup, rampant alcoholism and crappy working hours as well. Having worked in restaurants for a few years, I said I’d never date a cook. I broke my rule and it turned out just as badly as expected.

I had the exact same experience as you - it's truly incredible how similarly all abusers think and behave. I left my abusive ex after reading this book and it was the best decision I've ever made.

Absolutely, self esteem is critical. Poor self esteem since childhood is the core of my issues with relationships and so is loneliness, because I've always tended to isolate myself (most likely due to poor self esteem..). I never would have put up with the crap that I did if I valued myself. I dated a guy way longer than I should have out of loneliness but he just ended up making me feel even more lonely when he would disappear for days at a time and only give me breadcrumbs. I was so desperate …

I'm in the same boat. I escaped from a terrible long-term relationship last year and was really turned off by men in general after that. Then I met a guy unexpectedly and we started dating casually. I had a terrible experience and learned that casual sex is really not for me. I felt very demeaned and devalued and despite the short length of the relationship, ending it hurt more than I thought it would - I was able to end it before too much damage was done thanks to the confidence this sub gave m…

Super weird! This reminds me of my ex. He was a textbook narcissist and used to cry about the weirdest stuff too and expect sympathy - this grown ass man would literally cry at episodes of Grey's Anatomy and then scream the most horrific things at me the next minute. He also had this weird compassion for celebrities that he didn't have for the people who were actually in his life. It was absolutely bizarre and I still don't understand it. It seems like it these behaviours might be to elicit symp…

It really is scary. That was one of the factors that pushed me to finally leave - I was terrified that I would develop something serious and permanent. I highly recommend the book "When the Body Says No: The Cost of Hidden Stress" by Dr. Gabor Mate on this subject.

Good for her! When I broke up with my terrible ex, my hair stopped falling out and my eczema went away completely. I suddenly developed a lot of skin issues and my hair was thinning a couple of years into our relationship. Whenever I would go visit my family, my skin issues would immediately clear up. Literally over night. I thought it was so odd. Then they’d return as soon as I went back to him. It took me a year to make the connection - I thought it was caused by something in the environment w…

Wow, same here! My ex only called me baby to the point that when he actually called me by my name (on very rare occasions), it sounded really weird and unnatural. I found it so strange and I see this as a big red flag now. He was abusive and never loved me for me either.

Last year I went to a new doctor about strange abdominal pain. He sent me for an ultrasound and they found nothing. He asked if I had any stress in my life - I had never before had a doctor enquire about what was actually going on in my life. I felt uncomfortable sharing it at first but I told him I was in an abusive relationship. He sat and listened to me for almost 30 minutes instead of rushing me out, and explained the relationship between stress and illness. This experience contributed to me…

I have the same problem. :( I am attracted to extremely few men. I was in an abusive relationship and also seem to only be drawn towards "bad boy" types. At this point I can't imagine being attracted to a "nice" guy. I know how messed up that is and I also want to know how to fix it. I really think that it's past conditioning and some kind of self esteem issue that makes us seek these types so I suspect that building strong self esteem/self love will help. My plan is to read as many books and wa…

For some reason it gives me a tiny bit of anxiety when I see that he posted a story and even if I mute him, I know I'll check his IG periodically to see if he posted. I'm not at a point where I feel comfortable removing him but I am doing my best to detach and it's working. There is a way to view IG stories without actually clicking on them so I just use that to alleviate my anxiety without giving him the actual view. You just click on the story to the person to the right or left of the story yo…

Yup. Recently dated a guy who straight up told me "I like you but I'm a bad guy and I don't want to hurt you." He meant what he said - luckily I took it seriously because I would have been terribly hurt by now otherwise. In the past I might have thought "oh he can't be that bad, he just needs love". Not anymore. Believing him saved me a lot of pain.

I think I had to hit rock bottom for FDS to get through to me. Actually experiencing the pain of being terribly mistreated by multiple men and seeing other women having similar experiences made me much more receptive to the philosophy of this sub. Like you, if I had found FDS when I was in the thick of my 5 year abusive relationship, I'm also not sure if I would have been able to leave my ex because I was brainwashed by his abuse (full blown narcissist, it was a horrific experience). I ended up …
