Everyone in the show is trapped in an unfulfilling life and the main characters all suffer from neuroses. Don is self-loathing, the product of a tortured past, with his life perfect to external appearances but in turmoil and withdrawn, unable to connect to other people except briefly through flings that all turn out meaningless. Pete hates himself and his life, is jealous of Don and petty in general, forced into the same broken domestic situation as everyone else, without any close relationships…
