How is data showing women prefer height, in and of itself, inferring blame on woman through a lens of male sexual entitlement? The Economist is the hardly the publication to make a such a claim.

I read it not as "resentment towards women for having standards" but as "resentment towards social narratives that only men are superficial and responsible for bodyshaming."

I think the entertainment industry has always centered around both "attractive" men and women. The fact there's more diversity of men in lead and supporting roles does undermine the fact that conventional attractive qualities were always foregrounded, and there was only more representation to represent characters that were evil, villainous, sleazy, slothenly, etc. as contrast to the leading male roles. This was especially true of how they used racialized roles but that's beside the point. I feel…

So therefore it was a women's body positivity movement. What I and a lot of other posters are saying, that's the issue, is that it was a movement presented for all, when that hasn't been the case. That could've been the intent but that was definitely not the case in practice. I agree with what you're saying, but only so far as the movmeent has made conditions better for women in addressing women's relationship to BDD and beauty standards. You yourself pointed out that men were never the focus. Y…

I'd argue that this not really about the 2024 election. If anything, that's set us back economically, put men in direct harm (war is never good for anyone), and... in terms of being a left wing male advocate, I'd never align myself with the right in anyway whatsoever. Interest in men's health comes from continued advocacy surrounding men's experience and holding the line on egalitarian principles. It's taken until 2024 because of convergence of issues: covid exposing traditional gender roles and…

The idea that body dysmorphia was higher and more complex for women than for men is a false hierarchy. They are just different. Men's body dysmorphia manifested itself as reverse anorexia, "bigorexia," and muscle dysmorphia. Compared to issues for women, it's been relatively unexamined until recently (though it was added to the DSM as a subcategory of body dysmorphic disorder in 2013). I think everyone has had to reckon with standards and body positivity for women. The same has been applied to m…

Obviously it's not applicable to all women. I don't think sociological conclusion ever is. I do think this is common enough however, that it constitutes a lot of men's experience of women, and is enough to have weight. The inability of society to admit that these women do actually exist erases the experience of these men, which just causes deeper resentment. That erasure is what leads to bigotry.

The justification or sympathy towards radical feminism provided by actual feminism is what makes me disillusioned with it overall.

I'll say that women are a part of this. The idea that men should be providers (the data on women dating up is fairly solid and substantial at this point) is part of the financial and resource drain on men. A more egalitarian approach to dating woul help in terms of affordability to participate for everyone.

I'd love for that. I'm skeptical of it ever happening though as (at least in America) see every gain or loss as a transaction within a zero-sum game.

Where am I getting this defintion? The idea that third spaces are where people go to meet, build, and be in communion with others, which is also where people have traditionally met their partners. Apps have mainly supplanted this however. A family friend encouraged me to go to "church"/temple with her (my family is sort of bhuddist) to meet someone. I read at cafes because I also hope to be seen when I could easily not pay $7 ($9 with tips) and do the same thing at home. Some of that my be roman…

When friends and family ask me why I'm not married yet, I just tell them I haven't really found anyone yet. A few times, I've peeled the curtains back and said "I don't know what it'd add to my my life." The look of shock from my mom, aunts, and female friends haev been pretty funny. There was no prior thought that I could have wanted something of value just for myself in return that wasn't contingent on having a family or having children. The reply was "whose going to take care of you when you'…

I think the issue is that we talk about "male loneliness" as one singular concept. There's really two strains of male loneliness out there, the loneliness that comes from lack of romantic relationships and then one that comes from lack of platonic ones. They really should be treated differently. Looking to third spaces as some kind of panacea for male loneliness is a bit flawed imo considering that one of the primary roles of third spaces was to meet others for dating. It also assumes that third…

The gender dynamics/expectations that exist in dating and courtship don't just go away once you're married to that person. If anything, the absence or erosion of those things is what leads to tension in marriages imo.

I think we've crossed the rubicon, as far as dating/relationships is concerned, from equity to punishment. Decentering women removes the punishment, which was the withholding of sex. You can no longer instrumentalize that if men willingly step away from it. It also destabilizes the assumption that men are all innately sexual predators incapable of controlling themselves. It also asks the question, if men are self-sufficient financially, emotionally, and mentally, and not interested in children a…

There's definitely a split between feminism as anti-sexism and gender-based injustice to feminism as advocacy and advancement. I think feminist discourse will never admit this however, as examining that advocacy will likely remove some of the political/institutional power that it gets it from presentning itself as equity-based, and the field itself is incapable of conceding any moral leverage. I'd say they work in hand-in-hand instead of being antiethical. Equity-minded groups provide moral and …

Like I said, if it's egregious, they should be banned. I realize these days, I downvote and report way more often I used to, when in the past, I might just scroll past it.

I don't believe in outright bans either unless it's something especially egregious. If someone's here to not in good faith, the community should downvote accordingly. Let them be visible as examples. I'd rather not have an echo chamber but would like a more solid collective.

Just argue using the same terms, internal logic, and rhetorical tools that traditional feminist discourse has approved and institutionalized. More often than not, you'll see blatant displacement, deflection, immediate defensive withdrawal and disavowal. Be a mirror but applied in the other direction. No matter what, you cannot use incel or redpill rhetoric as you will be immediately discredited (as it should). If anything, this calls for a framework for discussing men's lived experiences and emo…

I had thought this space would allow for people who are transitioning out, and as such, allow for people to share and be in community with others who've been through the process. I think sharing personal frustrations felt along the way is valid (provided they're not inflammatory, accusatory, and approached in good faith.) The person who responded to me might not have seen it that way, but being you have "work to do" as a right to engage, to just be here, with no acknowledgement of anything else …

Oh for sure. There's a lot of critique on the academic side. My comment was primarily about how that gets distilled and distorted in spaces like TikTok. etc. as vent content, delivered free of criticism, really needs to be addressed. It's become a mode that hurts more than supports imo. Thanks for engaging with the content of my message.

As much as I try to avoid and step away from it, that's how I feel sometimes too. Not so much, the retaliation and victimization dynamics, but the feeling of being silenced and lack of empathy towards men's experiences. This shows up in the pop feminist discourse that's spouted in many places and its awareness gaps that present as hypocritical or intellectual dishonest. flattening/dismissal of men's emotional experience. For sure, and I'm glad we are. But why are we discussing the shortfalls of feminist doctrine to begin with in conversations about men's experiences? I'm in a group on Discord where guys check-in with each other, share their experiences, vent, talk about what's going in their life, work, etc. Feminism as a doctrine hardly ever gets brought up.

I agree on your point about using non-gendered terms where gender is not part of the discussion. Honest question, why do we, men, keep going over to r/askfeminist for discussion instead of having those conversations here or in places like r/menslib, r/bropill, etc.? What are we hoping to achieve or accomplish? I don't go about my day thinking about feminism, so much as I do about issues affecting men's experiences, like mental health, depression etc. And when we I say, "I don't we're... " I'm sa…

I get what you're saying. And sadly, yeah, it is very sad that the same moves to protect their space is also the same thing that creates the very people they're to protect themselves from. I don't think we're going to fix that issue as that requires some kind of larger collective feeling that just isn't there right now. There's only them and us. I work in academia and work closely with a lot of college faculty who teach women's studies, gender studies, ethnic studies, etc. From what I've seen in that subreddit, and just online discussion spaces in general, there are a lot of people who comment and give opinions without fully understanding the values and principles of the banner they fly under, or are excludeding or disacknowledging aspects of it that they don't agree with. I think there's a difference in caring about a person and caring in a way that you lose yourself. As a former give them everything type, I've learned that to care a little less about my partner is better for my overall wellness (if it conflicts with caring for myself). It sounds crass doesn't it. I feel like caring often gets paired with self-martying. Following your work analogy, I love where I work and what I do. I'm loyal and hope to retire from there. But, if shit hits the fan, and they need…

The flipping of this is that you care less... about the other person and care more about your own needs, however based.

That's a huge part of the part of population we'll never ever hear from in these parts of reddit lol. Both men and women. If you're really husband material, you're getting wedded early... and maybe you'll pop back out in your late 30s or 40s after a divorce. Or you're a widow.
/r/PurplePillDebate09/07/25 03:17 AM

I'm saying that the context of where you meet a person also matters. If the person is hot but can't read. I will notice them but move on. But if you're okay attractive but the smartest person the room, I will notice and also listen.

We're going to need me some specifics on these materials, bro. Are you talking about the typical Chad fuckboy in their early 20s in college? Early to mid 30's guy with a six figure salary who runs triathlons? Jacked 40 year old guy, who just got divorced, but is getting jacked during their second fountain of youth? Personally, the hookup material and husband material are not mutually exclusive and people move from one spectrum to the other depending on where they're at in life and who their part…
/r/PurplePillDebate08/07/25 08:16 PM

OP, what's your definition of hookup material and husband material?
/r/PurplePillDebate08/07/25 06:57 PM

Dating apps are broken in that the only attractiveness is looks as that's shown and emphasized. IRL, this will depend on the context in which you meet them (I'm thinking of organic sitautions like class, work, hobby group, etc.), which also means, you'll have to get to know them first. If you're thinking about cold approaching people then yeah, attractiveness is going to be based on conventional definitions.
/r/PurplePillDebate08/07/25 04:55 PM
22

Confidence makes you more attractive, if you're already attractive. Assume any dating advice to only apply if you've met that threshold. What that is will vary based on person and context. Attractive at the club? Yeah, likely going to be completely physical. Attractive in a seminar on literary analysis? Likely going to tilt towards your reading ability and discussion contributions a bit more.
/r/PurplePillDebate08/07/25 04:27 PM
1

Where are you even getting that from? No, I don't treat old ladies like crap just because I'm not attracted to them. This conversation is not about day-to-day treatment, it's about dating and relationships. The poster I replied to gave the textbook definition of body positivity , which is that "people have inherent value" and are not required to "chase beauty norms." What I'm saying is that... that definition may be flawed in that value does not happen in a vacuum, but in relation to others, and…
/r/PurplePillDebate07/07/25 04:06 PM

I agree with that. The issue perhaps is that self-esteem is also dependent on treatment from others as well for many, especially when folks are seeking esteem through the validation of dating and relationships.
/r/PurplePillDebate07/07/25 12:15 AM
2

It's hard to reconcile the body positivity that's been espoused for people to stop feeling shame, with the fact that people also have physical preferences and select accordingly. It needs to though.
/r/PurplePillDebate06/07/25 09:54 PM
3

Indeed. Also, attraction in initial dating/just getting a date needs to be a separate conversation from relationship material. A lot of things people point out as good qualities only get counted after passing an attraction threshold. You need a chance to show your personality first lol. I think people commonly conflate these two things, which leads to a lot of miscommunication and misaligned expectations.
/r/PurplePillDebate06/07/25 09:29 PM
2

Agree, but that V body line is definitely not the standard among the guys I see day-to-day, lol. For guys at the gym, that is usually the goal, not the standard imo.
/r/PurplePillDebate05/07/25 12:50 AM

Absolutely nothing wrong with this. I wish this mindset for everyone. But, if you're actively trying to date, this will not directly help you, except in a tangential way.
/r/PurplePillDebate04/07/25 07:14 PM
4

You can do all this but if you are not attractive to someone, what you will have... is just a lot of friends lol.
/r/PurplePillDebate04/07/25 06:41 PM

True that. The social stratification will be between people who are fine with AI, and they'll do their thing in bliss (you will never hear from them), and then there will be the AI haters who will continue this discussion.

Then its going to be reversed in 10-20 years with lots of attractive men who are roided and women getting comfortable... we'll reverse positions for a few decades, then then the pendulum will swing back... cycles of power. As a millennial, I'm glad I won't be around to see it.

/r/PurplePillDebate04/07/25 01:37 AM

I'm wondering about that as well. What's the the difference between conditonal and transactional, especially if we're invoking terms like emotional labor, reciprocity, fairness, value, equity, and balancing them like it's relationship accounting... what's the difference? My understanding is conditions are the context, mutuallya greed upon currency of that relationship, transactions are how it's exchanged.
/r/PurplePillDebate27/06/25 08:48 PM
-1

Yes this right here. If you don't want to transact, don't relate. Everyone is getting something for something by just engaging with others. I think when we say transactional on reddit, we mean expolitative and purely one-way extractive relationships.

Well said. I think the provider mentality that defines hetereo marriage needs to be done away with. Financial independence is something I will always advocate for.
/r/PurplePillDebate27/06/25 04:08 PM

Perhaps we shouldn't list "provider"/"bread-winner" as traits for potential husbands, and learn how to be those things ourselves as individuals. Child custody, support, etc. will sort out income disparity and imbalance.
/r/PurplePillDebate27/06/25 03:37 PM
3

That's what I'm saying and advocating. Let's look at these reasons. These things are determining who divorce is harder on, in aggregate, not what OP posted.
/r/PurplePillDebate27/06/25 03:01 PM

I think the only thing we can look at how legal policy in terms of determining alimony, child custody, etc are ruled and based on what factors. And, how those factors advantage/disadvantage assumed gender norms.
/r/PurplePillDebate27/06/25 02:55 PM

I don't see how any of the things you listed are exclusive to women. These are not gendered aspects of married life imo.

I used to work at a school where they always let the women who had children leave early when things came up at home, and the men would stay and cover gaps in shifts, additional duties, etc. in their absence, whether is directing traffic at pick-up zones, yard dutying, watching over the cafeteria, supervising kids in afterschool programs, etc. It always made me feel uneasy, like we less valued and more disposable/exploitable. At some point, doesn't such a stance (men serve no purpose, etc.) become the women equivalent of RP rhetoric (looking at the just core tenants of RP, and disregarding for a second, the Andrew Tate, manosphere stuff)? It's the inconsistency or lack of coherency that gets me. This is similar to xenophobic conservative spaces who hate on immigration but can say in the same breath, but not Jose and our "good workers" (who work on my federally subsizied farm) are great wonderful people. And then when ICE rolls through, they're suddenly surprised where their farm labor disapeared to.

I'm not saying mental health services are gendered (empathetically, they are not, and for good reason). I'm saying that the socio-cultural vocabulary we on reddit use to name, heal, and speak about trauma, which mostly come from feminist discourse and center cis women's experiencss, is rarely extended to men in the same way. It is not a part of the discourse, though it has an adjacent and uneasy relationship with feminist discourse overall. Take the treatment of men who are victims of sexual vio…

I also think men, for all kind of reasons, generally don't have access to the same mental health and trauma frameworks that have been used to frame women's response against systemic exploitation and/or abuse. Then you couple that with the lack of support infrastructure. I've been hanging around places like r/askmen and r/askmenadvice and you hardly see male issues discussed in those terms.
/r/PurplePillDebate24/06/25 10:53 PM

Sometimes reading discussions about hetereo dating and applied gender is maddening. Honestly, I feel like het dating and relationships should just adopt WLW and MLM frameworks, as they de-center from gender completely usually and focus on individual desires and relational dynamics

Which is why you see articles and posts lately about "where have all the men gone" or "why aren't men at speed dating events," or "what happened to all the nerdy emotionally available men," etc. I think the problematic part is the expectation that they should still be around or that if they go on their own, it's out of spite or malevolence.
