He wasn’t in danger from the first and the second stepped in to try and stop him from attacking the first: self defense “the use of reasonable force to protect oneself or members of the family from bodily harm from the attack of an aggressor, if the defender has reason to believe he/she/they is/are in danger”. I am saying that he could have accomplished the same with less force at no risk to himself and that when the person was on the ground and he was swinging full force, he was no longer defending himself.
