That’s a pretty nihilistic variation of feminism. Ezra Klein of Vox has also expressed similar sentiments. The idea seems to be that since many/most women are somewhat/deeply fearful of being alone with men they don’t know well that it would be a good thing to introduce an element of fear in men in the same context. It relies on an assumption that the introduction of more fear in that context would somehow result in net lesser fear overall. Which may be true, but certainly seems absurd on its fa…

It’s a valid concept that’s intentionally misused as an all-purpose cudgel to bash masculinity writ large by way too many disingenuous people. It’s been misapplied and stretched in colloquial usage to the point where it’s unusable and unhelpful in most debates and discussions.

Women who resent the Cool Girl idea seems to make a pretty central error – they conflate an ideal that many men have with a minimum standard. If it were the case that the depicted Cool Girl were the only acceptable/tolerable potential partner, they'd have a point. But that's not the case to a degree that's straight-up risible.

I do. I know several. All got wifed by fairly high-value dudes before they were 30.

Do "cool girls" exist? Of course they do. Whether or not they're vanishingly rare or just uncommon is another matter. Does the bizarre Gillian Flynn-by-way-of Amy Dunne "Cool Girl" strawwoman exist? No, but that's not surprising. The idea is an amalgam of resentments possessed by a certifiable psychopath.

I guess what I’m saying is we don’t seem to have any room in the conversation for a “young girl hooked up with older guy and found it to be a wonderful/fulfilling/pleasurable/fun experience.” We exclusively focus on one trope - that of the ingenue manipulated and pressured into a male-pleasure-centric sexual relationship that she endures out of a naive form of love or infatuation. It’s reductive and silly, though understandable if you think of that myopic view as part of a concerted PR effort to…
/r/MensRights04/03/18 03:03 PM

I tend to go in another direction when thinking about this double standard issue. The popular conception that young girls who hook up with older guys are always deeply damaged and wronged is waaaaay too convenient of a narrative, and based in ye olde "virginity is a valuable prize" thinking. We're so desperate to rob women and girls of any sexual agency that we end up back in Victorian thinking.

Sounds good to me. From what I’ve seen out there, there’s tons of discussion on how to get consent and why the lack of doing so is so monstrous, but very little about how to give consent and why the lack of doing so is disastrous. It’s all a bit trad-con for my taste - elevating the agency of men to absurd heights and treating women like they’re universally traumatized and terrified children.

That’s one option. Another is for a person to understand that feelings, though often intensely felt internally, are nevertheless non-transmittable absent communication. What’s your problem with someone offering up what they want, versus only saying what they don’t want and making the other person work through a list of options until they randomly hit on the “correct” one?
/r/PurplePillDebate23/02/18 01:31 AM
1

No, because the person saying “no” to something now has ambiguous boundaries. Asking a series of follow-ups would be considered badgering. It’s on the person who says “no this, but yes to something else” to go first in the discussion you’re talking about.
/r/PurplePillDebate23/02/18 12:26 AM

Of course, but in that case it’s incumbent on the person declining sex to affirmatively offer up an alternative activity.

Of course people commit rape; rape denial is as ludicrous as rape hysteria. It's the odd, agenda-driven either/or that grinds my gears. It's like the situation with police violence - do way too many cops kick the shit out of and shoot minority citizens? Obviously - we have more and more video evidence to back that up. That doesn't mean that it's totally out of realm of comprehension or consideration that a given minority citizen might claim police brutality when none occurred for any number of r…

Uh, no. I'll take having as many people with progressive views in power as possible rather than focusing on demographic, surface diversity. Doing the latter gets you faux progressives like Clinton, who will happily use the rhetoric of social justice to prop up a neoliberal policy that shafts the least among us, who are disproportionately women of color. But maybe we should just have a more diverse oligarchy and focus on optics and "representation" among the elite.

So a government filled with anti-civil rights POC and pro-life women would be preferable to what we have now? Or is it the ideas and policies supported by the politicians in power that matter, and not their race or sex?

Nah, in scifi style it wouldn't impair mental development. While teens may currently be working through the early parts of sexual attraction during those years, our societies' prevailing mores frown on that getting out of hand. If our species is best suited by encouraging post-agrarian behavior, then popping out lots of kids while young and healthy isn't ideal. Better to engineer a situation where focused study during one's formative years would be the norm.

Delay puberty and the development of secondary sex characteristics by about 5 years. Let children be children longer and not be inundated with hormones that drive poor decision making and general frustration. Blunt the tendency for prolonged sexual frustration in men to congeal into resentment and anger.

It's unnecessarily specific. It'd raise an eyebrow if a blonde middle school girl was groped and the presumably male groper was told "respect blondes." The immediate reaction would be to wonder if the specificity was intentional (why not brunettes or redheads?) and indicative of biased assumptions. Respect people is universal and indisputable.

This is entirely predictable and a sad commentary on what moves the uninformed public. There are any number of substantive reasons to oppose and dread a Trump presidency. Couldn't agree more that both views are damaging. There was another thread recently that covered some of these same issues. I suggested there that the collective we should adopt the same type of descriptive variance that we have with the killing of a person (i.e., manslaughter, justifiable homicide, pre-meditated murder, accidental death). I know there are degrees to criminal sexual conduct, but I don't see broad usage of that system (which also by my reading is overly focused on penetration). I…

I think at basic level teaching people to respect others' sexual boundaries and to not impress their sexual desire upon them is enough at a basic level. Completely agree. Although I'd amend this to say that we have to put an equal amount of instruction and emphasis on the importance of communicating consent. Unambiguously getting consent is only going to work if everyone is unambiguously giving it, and that requires just as much instruction as the former. Also teaching good judgment skills. This…

This is a goddamn great point. The subversion of an ostensibly revolutionary philosophy to the purposes of the existing power base. The modern Western system has become adept at coopting its oppositional elements. Idealistic proto-threats get romanticized as "cool" and commercialized with haste. This makes the inch-deep support of feminism by the global power establishment make sense.

He notes, correctly, that racism is something that happens to black people and not to whites. The obvious inference being that sexism happens to women and not men. Even if i accepted the parallel (I don't) he's missing the idea that any particular means or method of addressing and/or correcting racism/sexism has the potential to be destructive and counter-productive. I agree about the hyperbole. I think slut-shaming comes down to jealousy ("how can she be with him and not me?!") and sexual economics ("girls like that make getting commitment harder for all of us!") than any inherent moral failure. Extreme examples don't and shouldn't typify the whole, but let's give some allowance for people to notice and speculate on deviations from the norm. A given conclusion might be wrong or caused by misinterpretation/selectivity, but it's not like social animals like h…

That's certainly another angle. I imagine a woman would get suspicious if she found out a fella she's interested in had fallen in deep, romantic love with a huge number of women in a relatively short time period. I can't say I'd blame her for questioning the depth depth of his feelings or the preciousness of his love.

I get that women generally have higher standards when it comes to sex, what I don't get is how sleeping with a woman (yay!) gets turned into "she was such an easy slut, how worthless" (boo!), but I think we're in agreement there. Yep, we're in agreement there. It's fair to question whether a woman with a "high" partner count has an atypically low dude quality threshold and speculate as to implications of that standard. Not saying any conclusion is correct of course, but maybe they'd wonder if a …

I don't see how you can get around the 'difficulty' aspect that drives a lot of the distinct standards. It's not an insignificant thing for the average man to convince a woman to have sex with him. It's exceptionally rare for the average man to be able to be able to frequently or concurrently convince women to have sex with him. Thus it's perceived as a note-worthy achievement. The average woman faces little to no difficulty in convincing men to have sex with her. The limiting factor is the qual…

It's like Bizarro World. Before, female sexuality was only valued and permissible according to a narrow, prescribed and ultimately misguided and untenable value system. Sexuality outside of that system was depicted as disgusting, deranged and destructive to the community and society at large. "No, you don't understand! We love and value female sexuality. It just has to fit in this box and have the approval of a Good Man figure (father/priest/mayor/etc.)" Now, it's the same thing with a different…

He's wrong in the sense that complaining about what portions of your insurance premiums go to what covered procedure is arguing with the basic working of risk pools. There's a much better argument to be made about differing rates based on risk profile, but objective wholesale to a given set of procedures is a recipe for squabbling and unsound actuarial practices.

Certainly not me! 88 grand seems like a shitton of money for child-related expenses. That said, I don't know what it's like to be a rich person. Maybe that kind of expenditure makes sense when you're in the 0.01%. That's what's really throwing me about this article, and the recent coverage of the female breadwinner development. Both are being positioned as "you go girl!" empowerment stories, but could just as easily be seen to validate ideas popular in the MRM. Reminds me of how the neocons spent a good deal of time denying they were advocating torture before dropping the pretense and shouting it from the rooftops. Under the standard BS excuse regimen, shouldn't the child's welfare be put above ALL other considerations? Putting the father in jail will reduce his ability to financially support the kid. After all, we can't punish the child by looking backward at who committed what crime against who.

This is massively, ludicrously over-inflated by bias-seeking feminists, but can we acknowledge that "most qualified" is a highly subjective idea? Assuming you don't have multiple independent interviews, a dude can get put into the "nah, I dunno" column for being short, tattooed, quiet, boisterous, you name it. It's the old-as-dirt liberty vs security debate. If you feel afraid all the time, the desire for the latter trumps your respect for the former. It's always an ebb and flow between the two because things don't settle neatly on either end. Is there an epidemic of rape? For the sake of argument let's say yes. Even so, the mechanics of the rule of law should trump that. Freedom isn't free. A bias towards liberty has sickening collateral damage. Welcome to the adult world, where shit is messy, compli…

Isn't that the two-edged sword though? No doubt the reason why the movement is called "feminism" is the historical underpinnings that you listed. But the fact that the term is based on things that happened many decades ago is the precise reason why the current movement has trouble changing its mainstream image. Contemporary feminists who are committed to egalitarianism (as opposed to female chauvinism) should bite the bullet and choose a new moniker. If only to make a clean break with the second…

An annual “well-man visit” would include HPV vaccinations, annual screenings for gonorrhea and chlamydia, along with prostate exams for those at higher risk: black men, anyone exposed to Agent Orange, and those with a family history of prostate cancer. It's one thing for Planned Parenthood (of all places) to offer some of these services, but it goes to show that men's health isn't valued equally.
