I mean, there are already dudes jacking it to your girlfriends bod, basically anytime someone jacks it to an ex that's happening. And in some relationships that's fine, some it is. Empowerment is choice, but a relationship means compromise of some choices. So it definitely could be rude to the relationship, but it depends on the relationship.

Yes, it does suck, and it's shitty. That doesn't make the title any less misleading. A "brand" is analogous to branding cattle, eg, putting it on display so you can't hide it or get away from it. That's not what's happened.

Misleading title - he wasn't "branded" pervert, someone reported it to the authorities and it was immediately cleared up. Ignorance and stupidity from the train driver, but it's not like the man got in the papers as a pervert. Clarity in titles!

I think it depends on your definition of fault. If the word fault includes 'took actions that increased the likelihood of an event', then everyone has some part to play in every event that happens to them. If we mean it as 'should take responsibility for the event', then it's a clear and obvious no.

Logically it is, but I think it's poetically useful in this case.

I agree with this, except there should be people looking out for specifically Men's Rights, because we'll all always have a bias. However, I think it is a huge responsibility of ours to champion equality. I would use the term "Egalitarianism" if we're changing terms, as that's already a thing. http://www.quickiwiki.com/en/Egalitarianism If this something people are really interested in, I have always been disappointed by the comparatively low number of subscribers and content on the Equality sub…

The more people we can get to the point where they understand their choices can rub others in the wrong way but that's fine, the better things should be. I'd argue that slut shaming doesn't make sense other than people want to cause value to a commodity that really isn't one. Thoughts?

In this case I'd go with "actions with the purpose to make the person feel shameful for their own actions" as a definition of shaming. Dictionary says as a transitive verb: "1. To cause to feel shame; put to shame." so pretty close. For you your listed example is just what your choices are, you aren't taking action that is intended to cause shame. Getting into the nitty gritties of an example, if a woman said "why won't you date me?" and you said "you've slept with too many people", that wouldn'…

Totally fair. I am a little more inclusive in my definition because I perceive broad strokes painted by the more specific slut shaming. Basically, in an attempt to shame sluts, I think people have generalised to make women in general feel like they should be ashamed of their sexuality. It's getting better, but I feel like the more we feel it's OK to shame people for their choices, the more that spills over to judging and hurting those around us more. The less that happens, the better, in my opin…

It's a bit "chicken or egg" in my opinion. Some people can come to being a well adjusted adult through learning to stand up for themselves, some people come to it by reconciling negative shit in their lives. Both, for me. And I can imagine my path would have been easier without some negative conceptions - eg, guys don't show their emotions, that kind of thing, to dig through. I feel like the more I can help people stop feeling like their feelings are invalid or wrong, the more well adjusted peep…

Why are we talking about feminists, or comparing who has it worse? That hasn't been brought up here. I'm not trying to address people who embrace their sexuality. I'm a person who is whole and can stand up for myself, but there's a shit ton of people in the world who get their feelings trampled on and I want to stand up for them.
/r/MensRights12/12/13 07:31 AM
1

Then either don't do it, or don't complain when people judge you. This is just how life works. We're not talking about people complaining when people judge them here. I'm talking about a general attitude that makes people feel shame about their sexuality which causes a lot of stress and negative reactions to those around them. Slut shaming doesn't just affect sluts, it affects a lot of women who feel like their sexual appetites are inherently wrong and should be constantly surpressed.
/r/MensRights12/12/13 07:11 AM

Most people aren't prepared to stand up in defense of their actions and beliefs whether they are reasonable or not. Changing perceptions about stuff is how a society progresses. It's a necessary part of our movement forward as a species.
/r/MensRights12/12/13 06:50 AM
1

Definitely not something unique to women or sex. Most people aren't capable of not feeling bad or telling others to fuck off, particularly when you are raised thinking that it's shameful to act that way. Not sure what you're referring to by societal engineering.
/r/MensRights12/12/13 06:41 AM
3

I personally think it's mostly women doing it, but the slut shaming is more about trying to preserve "value" to the "commodity" of sex, so girls get slut shamed if they give it away too easily, which means we have this game of girls putting up barriers to sex and guys trying to trick them into letting them have it from them. I think.
/r/MensRights12/12/13 06:30 AM

Absolutely that is something people have to deal with. But I'm not talking about them, I'm talking about you and slut shamers.
/r/MensRights12/12/13 06:18 AM

You shouldn't shame anyone for their own choices regarding their sexuality. If you don't want to fuck them because of that, that's your business. But don't shit on them because your morals don't line up with theirs.

This is really up to her unless you feel uncomfortable with it. If you do, then talk to her about it and let her know and figure out what she feels is appropriate and find something you're comfortable with. If you don't care that much, then it's just up to her, then I'd check in to see if she wants you to fight for her - lots of girls enjoy it when a guy gets possessive and just gets right in there and in the way. Some girls don't. Ask, find out. It might be a huge turn on for her, so it might h…

Can't quite tell if this is intended as an insult or what.
/r/MensRights05/09/13 04:28 PM

Totally fair. I'm just reactive about that sort of thing because I think the most common reason we don't "listen" in chats / discussions / reading is because we attribute validity based on the authority or author, and I think that closes minds to new information.
/r/MensRights28/08/13 03:29 AM

I think that kind of reinforces my original point - the quote should stand or fall on its own, rather than by who wrote it. EDIT: Most of your response is about why the message itself isn't pertinent in of itself - which makes sense since I didn't write "stand or fall" on its own which is my original intent, but doesn't really add much to the argument of "why should the messenger affect the message".
/r/MensRights28/08/13 02:26 AM
5

Can you go into more detail as to why the message itself can't stand on its own? This seems like a bit of guesswork - that the message only applies to one set of people because it was written by a certain person.
/r/MensRights28/08/13 12:46 AM
7

I think we're getting over the idea that a message's value is dictated by the authority that delivers it and leave it to stand on its own, nowadays. In that way, the messenger is irrelevant in the case that the message itself helps you to realize something.

Fantastic! Sarcastic insults are a great way for the MRA forums to appear level-headed and intelligent so we can garner more respect from the outside world. It also promotes healthy discussion and prevents opposition-based digging in of everyone's heels!
/r/MensRights17/08/13 08:06 PM

Exasperation is the right response here, because MRA's certainly don't want members who are just learning about the Men's Rights movement and aren't familiar with all the societal themes we're used to seeing here to come here and join us and learn more. I'm not sure what they would be doing on the Men's Rights forums either if they can't spot the obviousness... and less sarcastically, especially I'm not sure why they'd come here getting greeted with this attitude.

Absolutely agreed, we can only ever work with what we have already there. And I personally believe evolution is usually additive than subtractive, as in evolution itself has to work on stuff that is already there. Basically I was reacting to the absolute sounding 'there's nothing we can do' feeling I got from your opener, when it seems you are saying it takes hard work but is possible. These claims are a little 'blanket' - implying that the gametes have that huge of a say in our interactions beyond our social learning seems to truly devalue the reason humans have gotten so far - our adaptability to new situations. Cultural influences are mind-bogglingly powerful. I would say monogamy and marriage are cultural attempts that are antithesis to our inner evolutionary desires. Freely traded non-reproductive sex are answers that are in tandem with our needs, I would wager, and would…

I'd say the question is - is there a demand for this? If there are women who feel they are safe when away from men, this seems OK to me. The discriminatory nature of making the space is a little rough and points to bad thing in terms of administration. But are we making some people's lives better by having this room? That's important. It's also important that we don't foster discrimination. I guess I'm just very torn about this one.

Hey, I like the writing. Not quite my point of view, but it's well thought out and gives a new perspective.

Honestly it's not a horrific piece. It's pretty well thought out and presents the female side of things and what we can do quite well. My issue is the complete responsibility it seems that is put on men in the situations - and this is what tends to make me feel defensive - but in general it seems pretty sound and true to me.

Thanks for the comments! I've never heard her use the word feminist, honestly. Also someone else here mentioned the problems of labels, so I might try to avoid the word "men's rights" since it has a pretty brutal stigma attached to it right now. I think it's an interesting spin and could work out well, assuming you guys do a lot of research and make your points both factual and reasonable. I am hoping to get the support of some Men's Rights activists who are interested in helping me research as well as look over my posts before they are posted to ensure they are sourced correctly and things are factually up to snuff. The point is not to look for a balance of rights or to see who has more rights, it's to find issues where what people might consider to be humans rights are being violated, or facts are being abused, either in the case of women or men. In the same way that I can think of issues where Men's Rights are being violated, my friend will be able to think of issues where Women's Rights are being violated. I can't tell if you're trolling, or have been really cut deep by something that happened to you. If it's the latter, I do not mean to push your buttons and hope things get better for you. Unfortunately, your negative emotions and words of hate have no place in creating more love and understanding in the world, which is required to get the world to recognize that Men's Rights are a huge issue in the world.
/r/MensRights25/04/13 06:41 PM

The point is having a platform that supports both views to try and bring understanding between the two sides. Feminists see Men's Rights as rape apologists, Men's Rights see Feminists as man hater etc. I'm looking to create a platform where both sides can be heard and respected. (and debunked) I'm very disappointed to see that without meeting my friend you guarantee that everything she says will be a feminist lie.

"Being raped was absolutely nothing compared to having the case closed abusively by the police." Listening to them talk about the rape they don't display any emotional damage like someone who is actually raped tends to show. This statement shows what they're really looking for - for their shame for their mistake to have its blame placed on other people - whoever it can go onto most easily.

That is definitely logically correct in the situation, but I would posit that the mentality of not fighting back for fear of arrest is still the prevalent mentality here - it is not necessarily correct, or logical, but people tend not to be logical in intense situations.
/r/MensRights26/01/13 06:30 PM

Agreed, the follow up is important - but the follow up is guided by the mentality that dictates those actions. If a guy did it to another guy, the guy who got attacked has the option of fighting back. In this case, he doesn't have that option for fear of getting arrested.

I guess it depends on your definition of men's rights. In my case, I believe that stereotypes about violence against men make society more accepting of it, and that needs to change. This situation is an indication of violence being more accepted because it was a girl assaulting a guy. If a guy maced a girl, we'd have a problem, and it would get reported, because that's the prevalent mentality. And that mentality is a fundamental Men's Rights issue, from my definition of Men's Rights. Alternative…

Kind of a cool and weird line here. Someone who labels themselves as a feminist and has attributes and beliefs in category "A". Then a person who calls themselves a feminist and fits into category "B" believes that the true definition of a feminist is category "C". Who gets to define it? It's this kind of extreme response that isn't useful in a mature discourse, which is why I'm disappointed.
