I can see in that kid's eyes that all he is thinking is "don't hit a girl... just take it... people will think you are more of a man for not striking back". The rule "never hit a woman" imo is intended to stop overt abuse of women by men; however, when you make such rules, the protected becomes the perpetrator. Not to say women are somehow incapable, but men expect to fight constantly for opportunity and reward. To claim the environment is 'unwelcoming' just speaks to the environment and an individual's abilities.
