I'd say that neither is the book an anti-war book. The author is saying: this is what I did, this is what war is like, these are the changes to how people who go to war ought to be guided in the future.

I'm actually not a kid I'm a grown man unfortunately, which yes put's me into a potentially 'waster'/'loser' category, nevertheless my situation is what it is and I have to make the best of it.
