For me I like being up front and blunt as it doesn't waste any time and lets her know what my intentions are right off the bat, so I do direct approach most of the time. If I don't have anything original to say on the spot my go to is "Hey kind of a weird a question but I saw you earlier and was wondering if you're single." 95% of the time it makes them laugh or smile.
