1	Fundamentals: Marriage counseling does not work Framing marriage counseling or couples counseling as manipulation or ceding authority misunderstands what good counselors do. Most issues in marriages are communication issues. Counseling can be an enormous help here, but it's absolutely vital the counselor is neutral. My partner and I jointly decided to go to counseling then interviewed 3 or 4 before we decided on one. We ultimately separated but the work we did in therapy allows us to be close friends now.
