Some fathers are not involved. And some mothers are not involved. This is a problem and puts a disproportionate burden on the father. Considering legal bias for maternal custody in divorce, I have no doubts why some people in child-care institutions (including schools) would view mothers as primary caregivers. Statistically its true. But if we were to look solely at married couples who work similar hours, I would posit that the father is just as involved as the mother, in general.

My understanding is that child support does not need to be "court-ordered," as in decided by a judge. If you and your ex have an agreement, talk to a lawyer and get it on paper. You might have to submit that contract to the state somewhere but I'm not sure. Of course all states do things a little differently.
