I think that a lot of people, especially male, hunkered down in a culture that was actively hostile to and berated them merely for being males. Self preservation gave rise to a desire to find a safe environment. Many people maintain attendance in digital spaces as a result. Given the legal "perks" provided to women in our society at this time, especially in the divorce courtroom, it's essential that a man has and maintains some kind of independent security before entering into a marriage.
