I haven't gained much from psychedelics, aside from the temporary feeling of witnessing life from a dramatically altered consciousness. During my trip, I had the tangible feeling that my entire life was a waste, which is something I wouldn't wish on anyone. For meditation, you don't necessarily need to quiet the mind consciously. By going after the problem at the source (your mind, rather than externalities), you can literally modify your brain function to stop ruminating on negativity and to start focusing on other things.
