I've had those vibes just for mentioning in an online dating profile that I speak Russian. (Not because I am Russian - I am not.)

Oh gosh, I can relate to this. I stayed with a French family in my teens and told them I lived in the north of England. They said, "Oh, Scotland?" (I also had a Scottish surname at the time, though only through ancestry.) But on a more dating-related front, I once filled in a profile on an online site where there was a question about which languages you spoke. I included Russian, which I studied and use professionally. Most men either immediately indicated an interest only in sex or rejected me …

Never who you want indeed ... Thank you for the introduction!

I've been out with men who clearly wanted to treat me to dinner. For them it was automatically part of taking a woman out. I don't know if this is more old fashioned (am gen X) but I find it odd when women say they'd pay half.

My most viable relationships have been with men I met through mutual friends.

I love this: "You're painting him in the colours of your own good qualities" (and your writing in general). We're not pathetic, just so awesome we can't help projecting it! Thanks for the reminder.

My pedantic self longs to correct that to "nectar". But yeah.

Yes, there is no forgiveness without setting boundaries to ensure you can't be hurt in that way again.

And people are on their best behaviour at the early stages. The mansplaining and the rest was his BEST behaviour.

If you're going to reference Casanova in your failed attempt at humour, at least learn how to spell it.

I think that's a failed attempt at humour that feels borderline racist and certainly snobby.

I wear classic clothes that are well cut; I don't follow fashion much unless it suits me. These days I like to cover most flesh, but I could fancy revealing some wrist or shoulder. I could fancy shopping for some clothes that would do this. I am good-looking with great skin and symmetrical features - thanks for reassuring me that this is why I don't get approached much!

There is a chart plotting Leonardo DiCaprio's age against that of his girlfriends. In the teens it's similar, then the women's age stabilizes at a maximum of around 25 while his rises ...

"fact that you gave me that access then behoves on you to respectfully tell me ... here is to whomever you chat with blocking you in the future" Not only has he learned no social skills in 45 years, but also no grammar or logic.

Thank you - I feel so validated by this site. I am well over 30 btw. I tried OLD only briefly in my 40s. I thought I was doing something wrong with my profile that led me to attract so many men who were only interested in sex. That site was quite expensive. It was also full of subtle messages that made you feel it might be your fault if you didn't get matches - that you were being too picky. What a CON.

I've posted on here before about a man who was 50+ who described himself as "mature". It seemed a strange thing to make a big deal about.

There are two sides of the same coin, perhaps. Those that want you to play their therapist, but also those who want to fix you. They're the ones pushing the fad diets etc. Although, I was happy to find a new direction in skepticism and critical thinking thanks to one of these women - I started researching the claim that certain foods make your blood "acidic" - utter nonsense. As is detoxing, as is "manifestation" ...

Are you looking for people you could meet IRL? I am saying this because I have got close with other women online through interests (specifically an online book club). I am very close with some women in the USA and Philippines - sadly we may actually never meet in real life - but we talk online a lot and have a meaningful connection. (I am in a location with a tight COVID lockdown - in-person contact isn't a thing anyway). Otherwise I second (etc.) the Meetup suggestion - there are virtual COVID …

It's where you question your own sanity and think you must have done something wrong, even though deep down, you're sure you didn't. But his manner is so insistent that you can end up pushing your rationality right down and deciding you must have been in the wrong after all. As has also been said, this can be exacerbated by your own insecurities, which he will have found out about in full and noted for future exploitation. Lundy Bancroft describes it well in Why Does He Do That? It's when you em…

That makes me feel really sad for her. Apart from anything else: when I saw "I don't read" in the favorite books section of an OK Cupid profile, I moved on very quickly.

I once thought someone was inviting me out for dinner, but as the date grew closer, it became clear that he wanted me to go to his place. So I canceled. Other red flags that have made me want to run recently include getting too serious too quickly and putting me on a pedestal. Ghosting/breadcrumbing ... but that's more of a red flag for me not to chase them. It's probably impossible to list all the potential red flags - I can be put off by anything that I just feel uneasy about. Edited to add: O…

Professional men and pillars of the community can be abusive towards their wives, which means they count as LVM. Their worst abuse takes place in private with no witnesses, but also, their attitudes to women play no role in their getting jobs.

This, exactly. My ex was actually misogynistic and abusive, but he claimed he was pro-equality because he believed in my making an equal financial contribution, all right.

I am not sure how easy it is to prove cheating. My former husband blatantly changed his Facebook status to "in a relationship", seemingly unaware that I could quite easily access it. (This was 10+ years ago; I know Facebook changes frequently). He had a link to the profile of the woman he was "in a relationship" with and a lot of photographs of her. I took some printouts to the court but they said it didn't prove anything. I know laws differ a lot from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, though.
