The boss knows he'll never get the job no matter how long he stays, but keeps him around because if he's foolish enough to work for free, then why stop him? If you're upfront from the beginning, knowing you don't want the friendship but more, the women can simply reject and won't lash out/be upset. The problem is most guys can't do this. If guys walked up to every woman they were interested in and told them straight-up that they have no desire to commit to them, and only plan to talk to them and go on dates with them so they have a chance to get laid, they would never get laid.
