Then he should get a 0 on the assignment.

Replace women with black people. I can't work in a group with black people (religion says that they are actually devils), so you either have to segregate them out of the group or I can't do the assignment. Would that be okay? His worldview is not compatible the basics of justice and ethics. Any belief the promotes discrimination (against men, women, gays, straights, races, etc.) is not valid and should be condemned

He can be alone all he wants to if it does not affect others, but I reserve the right to judge him. Just like I judge Jehovah's for not doing blood transfusions or Amish pretending that it's the 18th century. Furthermore, his worldview is not compatible the basics of justice and ethics. Any belief the promotes discrimination (against men, women, gays, straights, races, etc.) is not valid and should be condemned. Like say what if his religion prevented him from being in a group with black people,…

Two wrongs don't make a right. His religion is ridiculous and he is not entitled to segregate classmates. If his religion is incompatible with society, that is his problem. Single gender housing is fairly reasonable for traditional cultural reasons, but a male-only option must be offered (although for many reasons it would probably be a far smaller program). The other things are a bit ridiculous though.

in the microsphere of university life, it seems so

The funny thing is that people actually play oppression olympics at my school. Like legitimately.

woosh It says equality explicitly because it is not equal. It's sarcasm/parody.

This is probably a parody that went over your head (and everyone elses' in this thread). It's pointing out the flaw in affirmative action. Especially with a slogan like "you heard the complaints, it's finally happening!". This is copied from what happened at my university about two years ago that got national press coverage http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/27/us/campus-diversity-bake-sale-is-priced-by-race-and-sex.html. This one targeted both race and sex though.

Not to my knowledge. I have not heard any criticisms of them, and my understanding is that every male freshmen gets invited to apply. Berkeley students love to be very into social justice issues, but this has never been brought up. On a different note, our "rape prevention" mandatory lecture thing also went into how men can be victims and how men face higher stigma to report rape. The lecture was more focused on women as victims, but the organizers apologized and said that although it's not righ…

Yes, I was offered many scholarships for men only. These came through university channels, although they were private. Example of one: http://pauleyscholarship.org/ Many orginzations offer "balanced man" scholarships.

It stops the blame from going to UC Berkeley. OP was insinuating that the university itself was participating in discrimination. It would be a lot different if one of the world's leading schools was giving aid only to women and not men (as part of their main financial aid system) instead of it just being an independent dorm with a private scholarship.

First of all, the International House is not a part of UC Berkeley proper. They have a strong relationship with the university, but it is not run by the dormitory service of the university. Second, the scholarship clearly comes from a private source (UC Berkeley Section Club). Privately funded scholarships can have restrictions based on race, gender, or anything else they want. It's not up to the university. This is not the main financial aid of the University (totally separate system), and it s…

Womyn is another sanitization, but a bad one. It fails to even mask the root of the fictitious problem they are trying to solve. If you go back to Old English though you'll see that "man" meant any person, werman meant XY and woman meant XX. I have never heard of "fem" being used as a word for females (although I'm gay, and for us fem/masc means guys who are more or less stereotypically feminine). On the other hand these do come from Latin and not English, where "masculus" meant XY and " femina"…

At risk of sounding like one of the crazy MRAs, I would disagree. Removing "-man" from everything is just sanitizing the language and covering up linguistic history (good or bad). "Man" still does mean all people, although that connotation has slightly changed over the last half century. Should we get rid of the word "human"? It has a "-man" but few people would argue that it is not gender neutral. What about "woman" and "female"? The pronoun issue is a little bit tricker, but I still think that…

And that isn't rape, but it is kind of scummy.

I just took the course. It does not say rape, just that he is being kind of scummy (they phrase it as "risky"). He narrates the scene and says he will get the girl drunk enough to agree to go home with him, and chooses this one because she looks vulnerable. In #4 the guy narrating actually yells at her for being late, and then in the next panel drags her away. It also does not call this rape, but says it may be a sign of an abusive relationship.

Yes there is a male victim scenario! I just took this course. There is a 3 minute video about a guy who gets assaulted and then struggles to report it because of shame. There are also stats about male rape all throughout. I do admit it is more focused on women though. You also took this scene way out of context. The guy narrates it and says he plans on getting the girl drunk enough to go home with him and picks her because she looks easy. That's kind of scummy IMHO. The course doesn't call it ra…

I'm taking this course right now, and it's not that bad. It does go over how stereotypes can be bad for both men and women. It also acknowledges that male rape is a problem, and gives stats on it. There is even a "friend of a male victim" video and the struggle he faces reporting it. It does focus on women more, I'll admit that. The scene with the guy at the party is taken out of context. The guy specifically says that he wants to get her drunk enough to go home with him. The course says that is…
