it's difficult, though, isn't it? When you're comfortable with someone, already, it's fine to just let the conversation drop until there's some sort of relevance to follow up with. Of course, when you're comfortable with someone, those silences tend to occur with an exponentially lower frequency...

Bugger, I know you're probably right. I'm yet to write my first official [FR] and will do my best to superstruct some direct examples as I go through this week's meetings.

sigh but there's so much shit I could be getting done... yeah, okay, you're right. I've tried the latter with mixed success. Most people find a way to turn it around and start talking about themselves again, ending the conversation almost as quickly as it starts. Do you think it could be a generational thing? I have noticed I have more issue with this when engaging other millenials (mid-20s/younger, atm) than gen Xers and even boomers. Also, yes, I think of people in generations as opposed to ag…

haha, that would be cool but I'm a novice ruby + rails developer with a background in visual design, digital strategy and lean product development. tldr; I help small businesses and startups catch up to the digital age, whether that means developing an mvp to attract investors, building a website with an emphasis on scalability, or simply getting your brand/identity in order.

Yeah man, if you find any legends about probing skills, I'm probably in there somewhere :P

See, the problem isn't getting the other person to talk about himself (or herself), it's more that after two hours, I know a great deal of intimate info about whoever I'm sitting down with and they haven't taken the initiative to get to know an ounce about me. It might be selfish to think of it that way, but sometimes I just want someone to ask me how my day went ಠ_ಠ

I see where you're coming from and can concede that I'm probably a little too "on" in all situations. I appreciate your perspective and will try to relax; you've given me much to think about to try out in my next field experience. [good news, everyone! I've got meetings all week!] I do think it's worth mentioning that my goals in pursuing game are completely non-sexual (no, really). I undertook the study mostly for the power it would give me as an entrepreneur - the deeper understanding of socia…

Kewl, I'll check out the lean back method. Honestly, though, I typically don't start out talking, I start out asking. You've inspired me to try it the other way, though, if for nothing else than science. It sounds like you've overcome a similar hurdle, did you deal with this problem in your Journey to Game, as well?

Ha, I think I answered this before but the last time I tried this, a girl just looked at me and shouted: "what?!". Sort of put me off trying it again, but perhaps you're right and this needs to be revisited. Ever embarrassed yourself trying to keep the conversation alive?

a reasonable hypothesis, but what else am I supposed to do? If I stuck to my instincts, I'd just whip out my laptop, mid-dinner and code away until they said something.

I'm starting to think I have the same problem as a young chef coming home, late at night, and trying to make a simple sandwich. With inexperience comes a lack of control and finesse and I'm wondering if my problem isn't that I'm still always "on", even in casual situations. What do you think? Sound plausible?

aaaaaaaaaaaactually, like I said, my investment in upping my game was all business/social related. Oddly enough, a lack of interest in sexing your targets definitely gives you a +40 aloof bonus and major immunity to shit tests, especially if you're a naturally sarcastic sonofabitch to begin with.

At this point, I'm sorta taking a survey: What do you do while you're "enjoying the silence"?

I think the most disappointing part is that I do inherently find everyone fascinating, until it turns out they're actually kind of boring, self-absorbed, and have less social skills than I started out with. :|

The last time I tried that, the girl looked back at me and shouted "what?!". Kinda put me off that strategy but I'll give it another go. How do you feel about the idea of taking out a notebook and working out an idea while you wait for them to ask you something?

More good tips I'll try to work into my toolbag, cheers! What do you typically occupy yourself with when it's time to chillax and enjoy the silence, let them come to you or w/e?

Smalltalk's not really a challenge for me. Like I said, I concentrated on game for the sake of business, as opposed to sex & courting, and my probing skills are the stuff of legends. I'll put it to you this way: My problem isn't turning the key, it's getting the engine to turn over. Ya feel me?

Cheers, I appreciate the encouragement! The question I keep coming back to is: What do you do while you're enjoying the silence? One wouldn't think staring them down is a good option but daydreaming or wandering your eyes about might be rude. What do YOU like to do while you're just chilling out and enjoying yourself? You're definitely right in that it can be awkward when I've met someone else who's trained their game; though I typically recognize the nonverbals of a player pretty quickly and li…

I think someone else also recommended this and I'll definitely give it a try. Have you ever tried it?

Droll to me typically means "Ask a question" "Get An Answer" "Pause, maybe nod, expand on response [if possible/polite/reasonable]" which typically leads to either: a) silence count to 3 repeat or short response silence count to 3 repeat edit: expanding: What do you typically do when you're hanging out, enjoying the silence? I've noticed that staring right at them puts most people on the defensive but I would think looking around or away would be rude.

Interesting. I have a feeling that this sort of prolongs the inevitable but I'll tuck it in my cap and give it a go. Any particularly good outcomes with this, in your experience?

Word. I'm a big comms dork because my mom made it big in corporate comms and one of my best friends growing up was the son of a medieval studies professor who always had us reading and writing. Knowing just a little bit about communication, language, and interactive psychology will open big doors for anyone, these days.

The fact that someone took the effort to put that together leaves me somewhat bemused.

Good thoughts; I suppose I still equate "awkward" silence with my own failure to be engaging, and never considered that the tables might be turned. I wouldn't say that I ever expected them to take the lead, I was simply hoping people would be more apt to return my level of social interest. C'est la vie; I'll try to embrace the silence and see what happens.

ha, like I said, it depends on the girl. For some reason, the fourth one doesn't fit with most of the girls I like.

tldr: Focus. If your goal is to pick up women, you will pick up women. If your goal is to have a good time, you will have a good time and maybe you'll pick up some women. There's nothing wrong with choosing one over the other, but expect your results to match your mindset. What do do about your current situation? Let her go or invite her out. Either way, focus. Reading through your post, I feel like you only "failed" because your mind wasn't really into it. I go there with the intention of meeti…

depending on the girl, I've used and advanced with: "well, now that you're all clean, how about a [drink/coffee/food/trip to the club]". If this doesn't work, it's always a good "what does your week look like?" opener. "couldn't wait to tell me, could you?" "It was nice of you to get all cleaned up to text me!" "shower, huh? Did it help?" (PSA: don't do this) "a shower at this time of day/night? what were you doing before that?" My general thought on texting is that it offers an ancillary way to…

Is this linked specifically to seasonal changes or is it more about the onslaught of cold weather? If you're from a warmer part of the country, does cuffing seasons still apply?
