From what I can tell, they've gotten in to shouting matches, Depp hit a wall in frustration, and used illegal substances. I don't think any of this counts as abuse, and most are indirectly caused by Heard gaslighting and not allowing him to leave the relationship as you said, but a courtroom bias is possible

One thing I think could get in the way is sunglasses since they obscure one's eyes in most circumstances. But what if a blind man's eyes happened to cross a woman?
