They basically took the last couple years of hiring records and fed the AI the details and said “here are the types of candidates we like”. I work quite heavily with machine learning and AI tool development and trust me when I say that couldn’t be further from the truth. A good example of how this can happen is the is the Microsoft AI chatbot Tay or even the more recent Zo. Basically the rule with machine learning is garbage in = garbage out. It was a matter of sampling error in the machine learning algorithm as a result of the inputs used in creating the base knowledge levels. Essentially it had a much higher percentage of male applicants and male hires in the sampling data. As a result the AI learned that a desirable quality, completely outside of merit, was being male.
