Both actually. Communication is a learned skill and therefore needs to be taught. But communication alone won't do it. Empathy is just as important. People have this vague idea that there's the perfect piece of the puzzle for them, that understands them 100% right from the get go, and maybe in some rare cases that's true, but for the most part it isn't. They are not entirely a grey area. But men and women have far more things in common than they have differences. The problem is that many women and men who don't have as much of their gender assigned traits feel pressured to act in a way that makes them completely neglect their true selves. So instead to say "get in touch with your femininity/masculinity" (which can easily alter from culture to culture) the best advice is simply to just be yourself.
