You're right. A tiny sliver of Shanghai, and also the tiny island of Hong Kong, and I believe a Chinese port whose name escapes me. It wasn't enough to influence the cultural perception of what 'Asia' is. If anything, that would be the 'Orient', not 'Asia'.

In Britain, all South Asians of whatever religion are called Asians, and have been called Asian for centuries (since the days of the East India Company). If you are referring to Chinese, Koreans, Vietnamese, Filipino, Thai, etc, you would have to include a modifier like 'East Asian' or 'South-east Asian' or specify the actual nationality. Britain never got a foothold further east of Burma, so Asia was always only South Asia (they did have a sliver of Shanghai briefly, but then they had to share …
