Okay, but when the vibrator comes out and fun times begin, what do you imagine? Or is your mind clear and just focused purely on the physical sensation? If you have a partner, imagine you're single and not thinking about your SO. Not a gotcha, just genuinely curious

My post isn't about 'who is more socially incompetent', it's questioning whether only a single gender is becoming increasingly socially incompetent in an increasingly virtual world.

I'm 24 this summer and have yet to be in a relationship, so I guess I'm nearly at that point. I'm going to try to make something happen before this summer is over. I don't have high standards, I don't blame anyone else, I just suck at social interaction with the opposite sex. I've basically spent my time since 18 hoping to get a clear IOI or some other pseudo-approach from a girl because I'm practically incapable of initiating. Not out of laziness or entitlement, mostly out of fear - of rejectio…

They're listening to your conversation because they think you are attractive. But I understand, you want more depth from the initial meeting.

That's avoiding the question. We've already established that men have a powerful urge for sex with multiple partners.

I recently finished 1984 by George Orwell. Your comment reminded me of the attitude of the ruling party towards sex in that book. It's not for pleasure and most people dislike it, it's a 'duty to the party' strictly for reproduction. A world like that would be very depressing. Your comment makes it sound like that's how it is for women a lot of the time.

What if 'working for you' does nothing to attract women?

I've always distinguished between platonic and sexual love in my relations with girls, I guess it's time to change that.

Yeah. The way I'm trying to look at it is, enjoy the single life but if someone comes along that I click with that's a nice bonus.

it's almost surely based on looks To be fair you have nothing else to go on when you first see someone.

Is it the same whether you're approaching with the intention of a ONS or long term dating? Is the aim always to sexualise the encounter?

Okay. I guess I'm just not particularly attractive, because I've only had really obvious signals from a girl once. I'm working on myself, though.

but responds to my flirting or eye contact. What is that response, if not an approach? my flirting It sounds like you're the one doing the approaching, because if a guy respond to smiles and eye contact with his own smiles and eye contact, there still hasn't been an approach on either side.

I can't tell if this is sarcasm or not. If it isn't, I don't know how you took that meaning from my comment.

Social evolution has certainly outpaced biological evolution, that's for sure.

I get it. There's something in him showing his feelings towards you that changes the dynamic of the relationship, that alters the way you perceive him.
/r/PurplePillDebate31/03/19 01:47 PM

I think I understand. It's hard to tell if I'm bad at picking up signals or I'm just not getting them, though. I got a particularly warm smile from a girl at the library a few weeks ago, it seemed different to the average, polite smile. That sort of thing doesn't happen to me too often, so by the time I had digested it the moment had passed and we'd gone our separate ways. I guess I should be less risk-averse and take more chances.

Aha. I recently did a module on Clausewitz. Seems impenetrable at first but once you get to grips with it, it's amazing how much theory from a 200 year old book stands up today. Reading War Studies at KCL and really enjoying myself. 20th century, particularly WW2 armoured warfare, is my forte. Napoleonics are very cool too though.

No they aren't, they're making a distinction between 'normal' (natural) behaviour and the suppression of that behaviour to conform to societal expectations.

You can go your own way and still discuss its advantages and why you're doing it. There's a difference between doing something and discussing something, that should be obvious.

Two years is a very long time in a non-serious relationship. I've made some of my best friends after interacting with them for a few months. How exactly should not taking your man seriously present itself? Do you mean actively letting your partner know he's not important to you (yet) or do you put up a front and pretend to take it seriously until, after an arbitrary number of years, you decide that he has a right to insert his little chap?

I think if you're deemed by society to be attractive, you're much more likely to be confident. Many ugly or overweight people have low self esteem because of those things. They're conscious that they are unattractive and therefore feel a proclivity to give up without trying.

I second this. Going carb free - especially at breakfast and lunch - made my appetite diminish significantly.

It is used that way, but when talking of 'denying reality', don't forget that we ARE apes. Defying nature can be very hard work. Most of the time we do a pretty good job.

Women don't ask you for too much these days It would be helpful if you provided a list of the things a man needs if you are to consider seriously dating him.
/r/PurplePillDebate16/02/19 04:37 PM

We're great apes half a chromosome away from chimpanzees. It's helpful to keep that in mind. Ignoring the pull of millions of years of evolutionary nature because a few thousand years of civilisation is telling us to doesn't always come naturally. Actually, the opposite is true. Not excusing shallow behaviour, but there is a reason for it - and it's not always just choice.

I keep hearing the advice that meeting a girl at work is the last thing you do, but honestly these days I can't think of any other place it's acceptable to cold approach someone at any time of day apart from social settings, and girls there are by no means interested in LTRs.

It's bad to me because I don't want to live in a world where cheating is the norm. Treat others as you wish to be treated, without making exceptions just because hypothetically no one will find out. Socrates used a term called 'daimon' to describe his inner sense of morality. When he made a cheap remark, or was dishonest with himself or others without good justification, his 'damon' made him feel hollow. Morality is the way you behave when no one is looking, as well as when they are.

I'm going for what I think makes a 'real' man in broad societal terms. I want to avoid describing myself and try to be a little more objective, though questions like this are very hard to answer objectively. Physically and emotionally healthy (excluding health or emotional issues that are out of one's control, like physical disability or mental health disorders); easy-going but can take the lead or assume a protective stance when necessary. Courteous but not patronising. Mostly, though not neces…

On this sub, it is ridiculed to ask a woman out by cold approaching her, because apparently women should be 'flocking' to you if you're an attractive man More because cold approaching seems acceptable to most women only under narrow circumstances. Not saying that's wrong. men who pay for dates are mocked It seems to me that women are increasingly happy to go Dutch, and often prefer to. I agree with the general premise only when discussing people at the top of the food chain - I'm not sure the pr…

I'm trying Bumble, no luck after 10 days. I'm in a big city though so I imagine girls are being swamped. I've had a couple near-meet ups on OKC in the last 10 days, but they seem to lose interest around the time numbers are exchanged. I don't drink, unfortunately. I might look for volunteering opportunities though.

I think men, in general, have a higher physical pain threshold. I'm not sure about bacteria-related stuff. I very rarely get ill, but when I do, it knocks me back. At the same time I've passed a gallstone, one of the most painful things I've yet experienced, during a lecture without anybody noticing. It hurt like hell but I just sat there with a sweat on imagining how I'd feel when it had passed. I'm very glad I don't have a gallbladder any more.

Where do you usually meet women today?

That doesn't sound bad for the woman. I assume she sticks around for so long because she's happy, because it's easy to divorce now.

all men have similarities I think the hard-wired desire to pass on one's genes (and everything that comes with that) can sometimes mask the nuances in behaviour, quirks and traits of individual men - at least when it comes to the fore, which it sometimes does whether we want it to or not. most men are not that intelligent when it comes to reading women I can't speak for all men, but I can speak for myself and many of my male friends. We don't need to read each other: we say what we mean, we make…

The situation of men in the twenty first century reminds me of Dean Acheson's summation of Britain in the 1960s. He said Britain had 'lost an empire and not yet found a role'. I think the crisis of male identity is a serious problem that is going to get worse before it improves. Habits regarding casual sex are unlikely to change very much, but LTRs are a different matter. For a very long time, and until very recently, the man was the 'head of the household' and the 'breadwinner'. I don't think i…

Damn. It sounds as though if I'd been a drinker I'd be much more successful with the ladies. I've never felt I had a reason to go to a bar because I'm not.

What is it about social settings that make it okay for strangers that you don't know to approach you? Do you go to them specifically to find a date?
/r/PurplePillDebate05/02/19 11:40 PM

Innumerable? Not sure about that. There's a few, but my options are pretty limited. Assuming we're staying with the rather strict definition of 'social setting'

Okay, I get the picture. I'm soaking all this up because I very rarely, if ever, go to 'social' events. I don't drink, which really doesn't help.

Can't you tell in the first 10 seconds, regardless of setting, whether you want to continue with a guy? It seems as though a guy you're attracted to, or not attracted to, would be equally likely to be successful or unsuccessful whether it was in the fruit and veg aisle or at the bar.

You gotta learn to get out of your head When I'm alone I pretty much live inside my head. When I lie down in bed at night I basically have a conversation out loud with myself and go over the day, or go through my thoughts or whatever That's when I 'get out' of my head. Getting out of my own head in the course of a day will probably mean turning into someone utterly different to who I am. Maybe that isn't impossible but it's definitely a long term goal. You gotta start the conversation with a com…

I find it incredibly difficult to approach women in real life, so my success rate is 0% (tried to offer my number a few times, that sort of thing, but didn't get anywhere). I've met in person with one girl via dating apps over about 5 years of online dating on and off, so statistically, that's a greater success. I've had conversations lasting more than two messages with about 20 girls in that time. I think the biggest beneficiary of online dating are guys like me, who just can't do person-to-per…

It's that aforementioned tendency toward violence .... turned inward. IIRC women commit as many, if not more, attempts at suicide but are less likely to use lethal force.

"like you that much" is very subjective, but whatever. I've fallen in love with a girl - couldn't really like her any more - and been too shy to directly ask her out. Not every guy always goes, or can go, for the jugular.
