You’re looking for capitalism. At the core of all human problems is the desire for some group of people to want to enjoy life at a cost to others, and critically, creating structures that make that systematically inevitable. Patriarchy is a result of the fact that some group of men, at some point, needed reproductive labor to sustain them while they focused on production. Racism comes from the same place — some group of people needed something, but were unwilling to pay a fair price for it. All …

Originally commented in my subreddit, but wanted to share here as well. This is a great overview. I can chime in on a few topics you mentioned, both from the POV of a hiring manager and from the day-to-day in the remote workplace perspective. Hiring Context: More recently, I've hired a writer for a project I'm working on. Less recently, I've hired relatively senior marketing specialists, engineering managers, QA specialists, and front/backend developers on behalf of a company. Sites like UpWork …

Its because deep friendships are built by doing things together. We’ve historically been robbed of the free time to do things with other women.

Financial independence is giving yourself options - no better gift out there.

Bit of a meta comment, but I’m loving how many of these have a component around investing, saving and building wealth. As for me, I’ve been working on some gymnastics skills, focusing on helping friends navigate opportunities in DeFi, and working on a media project I’m launching.

Like... dude, what. Putting away an extra 20k a year in savings while your girl struggles isn’t the equalizer you think it is 🤦🏻‍♀️

Aside from saving, which it seems like you're on top of - what are you doing on the investing end? The things you correctly identified (in terms of wage gap, spending gap) lead to an enormous wealth gap between men and women, which we need to work on fixing.

Treat: Remember you have five senses to indulge. Listening to music in the park and snacking on your favourite fruit is near free, but deeply relaxing. Trick: Set yourself up to take bigger upsides. Saving is great, but there’s a huge amount of upside women miss by staying on the beaten track, investing wise — being highly risk averse isn’t doing you any favors.

😂 Nothing ever "just works out". This woman is not only incredibly hard working and perceptive, but smart enough to make it all look effortless.

Dumb like a fox. They expect it to be 50/50, you expect it to be equitable, if he asks for 50/50 you should be baffled. If you’re pressed to discuss, outline why its not equitable and you won’t be considering it. On the flip side, develop skills as an asset allocator; its highly under-rated, but the fact is that being focused on what the best use of funds is, is by far the fastest way to make money multiply. He should feel like adding you to his team is an asset not because of what you bring to …

There was a story I posted to the sub earlier about what happens in a HNW divorce. Legitimately sad. You need to get your own, and look after yourself.

Ha! I agree with some of this, other parts not so much. My hot take on “girl boss”: CEOs have one of the highest rates of psychopathy as a professional category. Psychopathic tendencies are basically geared towards managing optics and exploitation. These “girl bosses” are usually not practicing anything other than the cult-building skills required of a young executive in office. Definitely assume everything they say is hypocrisy, but its really garden variety in nature. There are also female CEO…

Lol, no, that comment is gaslighting. Discrimination against non-families is totally a thing. My realtor legit didn’t tell the sellers anything except for “its a cash offer” and submitting proof of funds before we had an accepted offer. The deal is going to close without my having had a single actual interaction with them... they don’t know how old i am, or anything else apart from the fact that I’ll be buying their house.

This is trash. I was really happy to find my realtor who focuses on housing for non-nuclear families; she handles single women and LGBT couples who often have a hard time buying for this exact reason. Her approach to handling the interface with the sellers allowed me to lock down a cash-flowing investment property with a cash offer at asking in a hot market. The right advocate is everything.

Oh my God. This is why financial education is so important: it is absolutely mind blowing to me how many people allow men to be the sole managers of the family money. Why? With the right background, women are known to be much better stewards of capital. Why are we not owning that?

Ahh, hard. One of the most unfortunate things about abuse is how humiliating it is. At one point I managed to get myself into a thoroughly abusive relationship, and talking to anyone about what was happening was impossible because I could barely admit to myself I would let someone treat me that way; for the longest time i convinced myself that i deserved all of the messed up stuff that was going on, because if I didn’t, what would that say about my judgement? I’m really trying to think through h…

So: I’m having a hard time articulating this, but how can we normalize staying out of and far away from legitimately abusive relationships? It breaks my heart to hear so many of these stories include a relationship that’s now over, because by that time the damage is done. This is a situation where an ounce of prevention really is a pound of cure. This isn’t just a “LVM” ex — girl, you weren’t dealing with a low effort dude, you survived 10 years of domestic terrorism. You’re filled with rage bec…

Go out and do things you like. Meetups and sites like eventbrite are awesome for this — generally these are mixed, large groups. Usually men will try to “pick off fresh meat” (seriously, gross) so I recommend going into it with “I don’t date” as a part of your vocabulary. Actively focus on cultivating your relationships with women in the group, as well as the organizers. Offering to help do something that needs doing is a great way to demonstrate you’re there for love of the activity, not for va…

It's complicated. I'm never going to shame people for doing what makes them feel most comfortable -- fact is, society has spent a lot of time telling us we need to look a certain way, and if your ability to enjoy life is predicated on soothing the internalized male gaze most of us are subject to, I can't have contempt for that. If you want to pay the premium to be "just a little bit luckier", that's valid. My personal experience has been that overall, the behaviour has a negative expected value.…

I'm huge on the idea that the only sort of power worth seeking is power in the objective sense - the kind that's linked to increased agency, security, and pleasure. If you're doing something for "power" with the hope that someone gives those things to you, you're not the one with the power in the situation.

The dynamics of oppressors and oppressed are everywhere as soon as you start looking for them, and the fact of women being physically weaker and more vulnerable has always made us easy targets. In truth, I think its always been the case because women are powerful, and men who aren’t at home in themselves are afraid. I’ve never seen men exhibit the tenacity and pure effort that women can summon from a place of love. When we’re healthy, we work together, build each other up, and are capable of uni…

You’re incredible. Stepping out of the industry takes work, courage, and a major personal paradigm shift because of how highly compensated it is (at the cost of reducing yourself to something simple and palatable to men). I’m glad you’ve moved towards putting all of the gifts you have to good use.

I had a wonder older friend hit me with “you know why there weren’t the big famous female artists, scientists? Its because they were all rearing children or in hiding.” I think that’s when I really decided relationships weren’t it.

Thank you, my overall sense has been that in spite of the growing awareness of the importance of financial planning (aka taking care of YOU!), we still haven’t quite moved the conversation beyond the acknowledgment that its vital. I wanted to get the ball rolling on that conversation: what people account for in their planning process, and where they’re looking for support. The fact that women are often primary caretakers for other family members, and outlive male partners more often than not, ma…

There was an article I read about a woman who was running her own software development company leaving her job and SHUTTING THE WHOLE COMPANY DOWN because her husband, unemployed at the time or possibly WFH, couldn’t take care of their toddler. This man single handedly caused 9 people to lose their jobs because he “doesn’t deal with kids well”.

I need more people to know about that sub. I worked in investment management (building research products) for years, and the conclusions i came to were... 1) gatekeeping by investment management specialists is one big cope for the fact that what they do isn’t that hard 2) learning how to take calculated risks is fundamental to levelling your whole life up, because money = freedom 3) women are systematically alienated from “easy money” opportunities because we don’t talk about it with each other,…

I’ll disagree a bit about gambling. Most people can’t make a living investing, but one or two great, high conviction picks... not at all out of the ordinary as long as you can stomach holding for 10 years. On the flip side, there are strategies that are statistically similar to running an insurance business... and selling insurance is known to be an excellent business. Its one thing to say there’s a steep learning curve, but calling the game a casino trivializes the very real upside that can be …

Honestly: fuck ‘em. There are two halves to this. 1. Your home 2. Your property It is important you feel safe and capable in your home. Your home should be a place you love, a place that nourishes you, a place you consider beautiful, and ideally, as easy to take care of as possible. You do not need to own this property, the important thing is that you love it and it feels like its yours. “Property” is a very different topic. When we talk about ownership, we can think in terms of cashflows and eq…

I feel like I’m constantly talking about how important women’s financial literacy, economic empowerment, and straight up making more money all are. A queen is defined by her kingdom - your responsibility is building one. In seriousness, nothing will make you feel as grounded and in tune with yourself as knowing that you not only have options, but know how to find more. A genuine abundance mindset when it comes to your personal situation lets you be so much more objective about the role people pl…

This, ah. There's a big issue with being on the spectrum, that a lot of the needs you have (sensory issues, very direct communication, structure in your social interactions and so forth) are also vulnerabilities that you wouldn't necessarily want to share with just anyone. Definitely not during the "vetting" process. One of the schisms I've personally encountered with dating is that there's a very explicit tradeoff between acting in a way that is self-protective, and the self-disclosure necessar…
