I prefer to not see social relationships as being strictly transactional. If society functioned that way, then I'd say that the vast majority of the adults you interacted with as a child (hopefully in a positive way) would not have gone out of their way to do anything for you that did not provide a tangible benefit to them. Going back to the Saudi Arabia example, it's easy to see that a society that historically was composed of a bunch of subsistence farmers/nomads would make rational calculatio…

Based on your other comments I think you're smart enough to actually follow my line of argument - you're being deliberately obtuse. Put it another way.. would you rather be raised by a mother who has lived her entire life in a burqa, without a formal education, or by someone who could you know, at least read you a bedtime story? If you have any preference towards the latter, you'd admit that the experiences women (and mothers) have matter as well, and that all vaginas are not created equal, bro.

The point I was trying to make was that what you are advocating for (women are nothing but wombs) already exists in Saudi Arabia. Do you agree? Is that the sort of society you're advocating for? And really, it's not all about you. I'm sure your mother experienced more events in her life than being impregnated and pushing you out of her vagina. Is her life outside of her reproductive function relevant at all to you?

It sounds like you would like it in Saudi Arabia.

Um... perhaps you had a mother? A sister? Female friends?

Yeah you definitely went full crazy there. So she's sick and perhaps just wants to hang out, and decides to bring her best friend along, and you flip out? There were some communication issues on her side (like failing to tell you that Romeo+Juliet was off), but you handled it badly and somehow decided to blame her for not following your unspoken rules. I could understand how she wouldn't want to keep seeing a guy who: couldn't handle a minor deviation of plans (like the presence of a guy who she…

Well cool. I like this submission, thanks.

I'm with you there. Food for thought.. mathematics departments in this country (graduate students + faculty) have a more balanced gender ratio than many areas of software development. I really don't think the gender gap is primarily attributable to an intrinsic difference in ability.

You know, when people assert that the world is largely run by men.. that's true. But only a minority of men. As for the rest.. well, where would Reddit be without the silent, angry, downvoting types?

Er, you misunderstand. I was speaking of how the men's rights subreddit seems to be chronically short of the "organize and get things done" types.

Nah, but I would expect a higher ratio of "hey, I'm running for City Council" posts to "women are bad and men get mistreated a lot" posts.

Did it ever occur to you that getting things changed might require you know, getting off Reddit? Bunch of armchair agitators and procrastinators all.

How in the hell did you conclude that the author is a woman?
/r/MensRights08/03/09 06:38 PM

lol, do you think a self respecting woman would date the kind of guys who buy into this stuff? "too much education" "focused on career" "outcompete a gay guy in the whore sweepstakes" Yeah, the writer sounds like a real catch. Why would any woman want to marry a person with that much vitriol and latent bigotry under the surface?

I don't get the point of posting these articles. Some women are shitty. Some men are shitty. Couldn't your time be better spent encouraging actual thoughtful discussion rather than what looks to be a hatefest?

Dude I think you are too quick to categorize people. I took an intro to feminist studies course, and the first thing we learned is that the only really fundamental thing that all feminists agree on is the need to respect the fundamental rights of women. Aside from that there is a huge diversity of opinion and active intellectual work ongoing in the area. You're not really scoring points for the men's rights movement by coming off as an extremely biased individual willing to judge a huge percenta…

Wait, how does this relate to my response to your comment that men have a weighty set of expectations placed on them? Shouldn't you discount these things as belonging to the conventional rules of society? Inquisitive panda is confused

If you reject the institution of marriage, then why care about this set of expectations in the first place?

It's not a cause. It's an influencing factor, but saying it's a cause I think provides excessive absolution for his actions. I do agree that his family situation is unfortunate, and that his last words were probably not the product of a rational mind. I also agree that more social services should have been available, but the difficulty of treating mental illness (and the difficulty of ensuring good family environments) makes this sort of an "I wish" sentiment.

I don't think you guys realize how much pressure women are under to conform to standards of appearance (makeup, high heels, nails, etc).

I gotta say, how many eight year olds are mature enough to have the sort of planning and foresight to carry that out? He even knows the likely consequences of his action - juvie. I'd say this is a kid who had the horrible luck to be born into the wrong family.

Dudes, men's rights is not about hating women, you know, or treating them like sex objects.

now, why is it so hard for people who believe in men's rights (men and women) to organize and raise awareness in the real world? Why aren't there editorials in mainstream newspapers, why aren't there awareness campaigns, and why isn't there legislation being introduced to correct the worst injustices? Either the information pn6 is submitting is biased or something is seriously wrong with the way people are trying to solve this problem. This reminds me of the vast strides women have made in organ…
