I think that’s a pretty big generalization. I think people are just realizing that people change and you don’t have to stay with someone for the sake of staying. It’s okay to try a relationship out then part ways when it’s run it’s course. Not everyone is fortunate enough to find a life partner, and many people don’t want one. There are legal benefits to marriage, so even if it’s not lasting, it can be worthwhile for that phase of life.

Some things aren’t worth compromising on, especially if there aren’t enough pros to outweigh the cons.

My guess is they got married really young, maybe religion was involved, then over time they realized their incompatibility.

Not my awkward ass lol whenever I’ve caught a guy staring at me in public I get that sixth sense and look over at him but then immediately shift my eyes, even if I think he’s hot and want to prolong eye contact! I’m trying to work on it but it’s a hard reflex to break.

Haha sometimes we’re just being friendly, I promise!

Making friends is way harder than it should be lol. I just moved to my current city two years ago and have worked my ass off building a community, and now I have to do it over again UGH. Maybe I’ll meet my future fiancé there and I can have his friends hahah.

That makes sense. I’m actually from the Seattle area and am moving to Seattle proper in the fall. I have a childhood friend there but she’s the only one I know, besides my family and some other friends who are about an hour away.

Yeah the Seattle Freeze is real. I’ve found Florida to be super friendly! I’ve visited twice and loved it there. Not the biggest fan of LA, but I don’t know it all that well.

Exactly. I didn’t know this the first time I went out in Seattle. I went with my friend and her boyfriend and they were third wheeling me, canoodling in the corner. I was on the dance floor and kinda chatting with this guy, so I offered to buy him and his friends a round of shots if they’d take one with me. He was so weirded out and asked me why I wanted to do that, and if I was there alone. He requested that I show him my friends before he’d accept my offer. He was funny about it, but it was st…

I guess it depends on your definition of wacko. I’m talking untreated mental illness, delusional wacko. Not your typical eccentric conspiracy theorist. (Not to further stigmatize mental illness, but unfortunately this is a serious and well-known issue in many major cities).

This is the third time I’ve seen you this morning, on three different posts. Hope you have a nice day.

I hope it’s not either. I love meeting new people and shooting the shit, or just getting silly drunk with others. Some of my best nights out are with people I’ve never seen since. It’s one of the reasons I like going to bars in small towns. I usually end up talking with someone and having a good time.

I think this is regional too. When I lived in Boise (as recently as three years ago), it was very normal to make friends / hang out with strangers at the bar. It was almost expected, and was one of the reasons for going out. When I’ve gone out in Seattle and Portland, it’s very different. People are way more closed off and wary of strangers. I think part of it is big city vs small city. In a big city, it’s way more likely that a stranger will be a total wacko, and you will get stuck listening to…

Right, because well-minded people don’t enjoy casual sex.

Have you been on the internet lately? Half the posts are men crying about women’s height standards.

To use the food example from above, I think going to strip clubs / watching porn is, for many people, somewhat equivalent to watching shows on the food network. Sure, you’re not actually getting your need met, but rather appreciating content involving a subject you very much enjoy, and maybe using your imagination to envision what it would be like to actually experience what you’re observing. I’m a woman, so my experience is inherently different, but I’m bisexual and I love strip clubs. To me, t…

Yeah, I’d reconsider this very uninformed “opinion” because, to be honest, it shows just how little you know. Academics are in academics because they like to teach, like research, like being in the academic environment, love their field of study, or it somehow feeds their soul or ego. It’s a very competitive field filled with very competent people. If you’re implying that advocating for a single-payer healthcare system or adequate social resources for people in need (which most academic wouldn’t…

I know a relationship where both spouses are firefighters (with three children) and it works out well for them. They have tons of “time off” because of how scheduling works. If their work days overlap they may not get to see each other, but they have plenty of days at home together.

Not to mention retirement. I’m a SAHP currently and one of my financial biggest stressors is all the years I won’t be contributing to my retirement savings.
