Happy birthday 🎉! In March when I was 23, I closed on my first home. Somehow I've held onto it, through financial hardships and living as a forever-gf to an older man for years. When I found out the older boyfriend was trying to groom a child, I was able to run back to my condo and rebuild my life. I was a PickMe but I'm discovering that I had this power all along. Holding the keys to our own destiny is so important. My neighborhood has many single women and LGBTQ folks of all generations, surro…

I was proposed to by a guy I never dated, via a phone call out of the blue. He proposed a fake marriage for military benefits, and told me that I was his third choice after the first 2 turned him down. Hmmm, this did not convince me. He completed his military service as a single man, and eventually married his first choice. I was friends with her and I recall she originally dumped him for being a man child. 🤣 I hope all turned out well for everyone.

I was a forever-gf with a man who retired in his early 30s. How did he spend his time, is he rolling with it or bored, how does he keep his house, does he have social interactions, what's his sleep schedule like? In my decade of anecdotal experience: video games and porn, in his underwear all day, house a mess, and a "night owl" so I never knew when he was coming to bed. Sleep deprivation torture for me. He eventually dumped me for an underage child he saw at the gym. Oh well, good riddance.

Yas! After my grandma's second husband died, her neighbor man hit on her (too soon after his wife died) and Grandma turned him down. She knew he was just looking for a new woman to take care of him, and she WASN'T having any of it!

Completely agree. I'm spending a month in a posh b&b at the coast by myself -- I had sushi dinner solo last night and enjoyed the leftovers for lunch -- and I love this life. I've not been married, but my significant relationships have ended by death and betrayal, so I'm glad I didn't marry or have kids with any of them. I do what I want, when I want, the thermostat and lighting are set for my comfort, I travel, I have fun and it's easy to make plans and get a spot at nice restaurants as a party…

It happened to my grandma. As a young single mom she married an older man who coerced her to retire and care for him when her career was thriving (they had the means to live apart while she worked). He gave up on life and sat around all day grumbling at the TV, smoking and drinking. They rarely traveled except for family visits. By the time he died, Grandma had put off her own health concerns and spent the rest of her years battling cancer. She didn't get to travel and died 10 years younger than…

They do this all the time. They do it even more when the kids are teens/adults and they're separated/divorcing the mother of their children. "We grew apart", "we don't love each other", "dead bedroom", "ethical non-monogamy". Only scrotes seem to have the time and audacity for such games.

Someone tried this on me when I was vulnerable and naive. We were friends for years, he moved away with his academic spouse, but traveled for business to my city occasionally. We got together with a mutual friend to catch up. When we were alone, he mentioned that his wife has an "overwhelming hormone surge" during sex and finds it uncomfortable, so he goes on dating apps during business trips to "get needs met". I didn't say anything and headed out, but I lost all respect for him. Like, I knew w…

I'm so sorry for your family member! For years, I was with a boyfriend who didn't want to talk about possibly discussing marriage. He was diagnosed with cancer and I stayed with him until the end. He died in my arms, his parents got the insurance and survivorship benefits. They planned the memorial and scattered his ashes, and I was left with expensive therapy bills and a new start on life. It's rough to grieve and also realize that the person I'm grieving didn't wish to consider marrying me.

Haha, he could make friends with my ex, the 43-year-old who used me as the disposable girlfriend appliance while he tried to pursue underage teens. Surely girls young enough to be his daughter want to trim his ear hair and put sunscreen on his bald patch and indulge his weird fetishes in bed. ICKY. Put those men in the volcano.

Old millennial here! Since finding FDS, I celebrate that I didn't get trapped into a shitty starter marriage. I endured the "disposable forever gf" nonsense, but I learned from that and didn't get any STIs or wedding/divorce bills and was able to walk away. Even men who pulled this shit with the money and looks deserve scorn.

GO FOR IT. I have a PC job and went to the horsey vacay for my 40th bday. I was with women of all ages, some had been riding since childhood, and I was among the age 30-70+ish riders going for their first rides or overcoming physical challenges. One of my classmates started skiing and mountain climbing at 65 (!!) and is amazingly strong. While I was at the ranch, my at-home neighbor texted me "do you like horses?" Sending good thoughts and queen energy to you! Is there any way you can accelerate breaking the lease and tying up loose ends ASAP, like before he goes on the hometown trip? That would be an ideal time to vanish and move out. Can you negotiate with the landlord, find out the costs of breaking the lease and moving, get a personal loan or put stuff on credit cards for a bit? The parentals! Oh my. In 3 different situations: Went home with him to find out that he lives with excited/giggly/teasing parents that their son is in a relationship He shows pics and talks about his mom on the first date, and also every day for the next 11 years He hates his parents who live thousands of miles away, and they show up at my neighborhood bar where I was, alone, and force meeting (awkward!)

I went through horsegirl phase as a tiny kid and always begged to touch an equine, but horse exposure/lessons were out of the budget. Interestingly, parents would also not let us have a cat or dog, only fish and (later) small birds as pets. I understand we had a budget, but I think limiting my exposure to animals was a tactic of abuse, to keep me in my place. We had plenty of friends with farmland and large animals (including horses), and we attended the county fair. They just didn't want me to …

She was a badass, and even though she was a heavy drinker, smoker and narcissist, I suspect it was a reaction to the BS she was forced into. I think about her a lot as I live my life. I got to graduate college, and buy a home of my own, and cruise to Alaska, and lots of fun stuff that our foremothers were blocked from doing. GO FOR IT, Queens! 👑

Something similar happened to my grandma. She dropped out of HS to marry a guy who turned out to be a cheater, bravely divorced that ass, and was a young single mom of 2 daughters. Then she remarried a 14-years-older coworker and they blended families. He retired and made her go with him even though her career was soaring (she was so valuable at work, her employers wanted her to semi-retire and FLY HERSELF -- she was an amateur pilot and owned her own plane -- to work with them occasionally). Truth. I lived with a wealthy boyfriend for years, who always wanted to have kids "soon". I'm happily childfree, and we went to couples counseling to talk through the clownish idea of staying together while he co-parented with a non-romantic partner. It's a fine idea in principle, lots of single folks and the LGBTQ+ community choose to co-parent with non-romantic partners. What he didn't tell our counselor was that he (42M) had picked out a 17F he saw at the gym, stalked her public social media …

I recently turned 40, at a woman-led writing workshop on a ranch run by all women wranglers. The only men around were the chef and sous-chef who prepared delicious food for us every day, and one older gentleman in our workshop who was very nice. We rode horses and hiked in a national park, wrote in the afternoon, and read our work as a group. At night I looked at the stars and tucked into nice sheets in my own cozy room on the ranch. It was a perfect birthday, best days of my life. The post-40 d…

Me too. Remember how in WW2, "Computer" was a job role typically done by women, because they could be paid much less than men with mathematics education: https://ethw.org/Women_Computers_in_World_War_II Then as soon as they built the ENIAC upon the efforts of women, the machine was moved to a military base and all the women were deleted from the project. They know what they did.

My late BF's dad was an intellectual, liberal civil rights activist... And after his son died, he went off the rails and became a stereotypical FoxNewsDad. Wasted money on day-trading and dubious conspiracy scams. Grief can be really weird.

Truth. I wonder if there's a connection between enmeshed adult sons and adult men who creep on young girls/women? Mom may have treated him like a replacement husband/king since a young age. She might keep a room for him in her house with all his school pictures and awards. She calls him every day (or several times a week). He still sees himself the way mom sees him, perpetually in grade school/college, and he feels entitled to pursue the girls/women who wouldn't date him in school years. He may …

I've had bosses/career mentors like this. Couldn't ignore them and couldn't ghost on my job. I'm always going to have to deal with men like this in the workplace, so my approach is grey rock as much as possible -- communicate minimally in the most boring, concise, clear language and where other people can overhear. The other day I was walking with my gaze down and an old bald scrote pointed and spoke at me, "Young lady! I say, young lady! Garsh, you sure are purdy." Ugh. The audacity. My understanding is that bear spray isn't the best self-defense to have for human aggressors. Pepper spray designed for self-defense is a recommended option. Being prepared and trained in your self-defense is essential -- practice it.

At a BBQ with neighbors, the organizer complained about his online dating difficulties, and repeatedly asked me to search how to grill (the food that he made for himself) 🍗♨️ and what time it was ⏳. Yooooo, if dude wants to date or invite neighbors to a cookout, research "how to grill [food]" in advance, and have a watch or phone nearby. Also he didn't bring paper towels or plates to his BBQ, so I have to replenish my supplies. LOL 😆

I'm glad your friend ascended above that nonsense. In my early career/PickMe days, my male coworkers came up with a plan to go to Hooters for lunch. It's a rescue mission, they said, we'll have a fun lunch and buy some cheesy gifts to bring to our colleague recovering in hospital. I went along with it out of curiosity -- I would never go there alone or with anyone else. A mediocre lunch was had, awkward fake-nice interactions were observed. I pitched it to Judge Judy and they called me back wanting to learn more, but it didn't go anywhere. I'm not the plaintiff and there's no monetary value to "disrespect", but if my ex still wants to press charges, I hope it ends up in Judge Judy's courtroom.

Haha yes, he first said I did the disrespect by declining to perform a sexual favor when he woke me up in the middle of the night. Then I disrespected by leaving the bed when he literally kicked me out with his feet. And for the triple crown of disrespect, I left to go back to my own home because I was expecting a package delivery that I needed to sign for. I have a friend with Crohn's who asked me out (also a very active cyclist) and I think it's fair to disclose the condition upfront. If I went out on a dinner date with a guy and he ordered bananas and plain toast and ran to the bathroom, I'd find that very weird if I didn't know a special diet and proximity to a bathroom were necessary accomodations for his condition. I work in a male-dominated industry and a few years ago, some guy joined my after-work beer friend group and started to lecture me about how easy women have it in our industry. He developed a hoarding problem, gained a beer gut from a regular diet of alcohol and gas-station food, and is getting evicted. Meanwhile, I'm taking care of my health, looking forward to renovations on the lovely clean condo I own, and earned an excellent rating at my annual job review.

Yikes, I collapsed in horrified giggles! My ex had a beard that he let grow out during covid, he would put his beard hair in his mouth and chew on it. BON VOYAGE CAPTAIN POOBEARD! 🤢🤡🏴‍☠️

Agreed. I had male coworkers (in a male-dominated industry) tell me the decline into weight gain, aches and pains were inevitable consequences of our work. Hmmm, I prioritized my health and fitness and haven't had serious problems yet. Meanwhile, those dad bod guys all got divorced and their ex-wives and children don't want anything to do with them.

I'm sorry for your loss. I'm also in that club, and when I joined FDS, I had a new thought that even years of therapy hadn't surfaced: what if recent relationship disappointments were related to unresolved grief? (I got attached to a new man way too soon after my BF died, I was vulnerable and easily manipulated.) Now I spend a bit of time every day reflecting on my memories and feelings. It honors his memory when I focus on loving and respecting myself.

Fascinating article. In Shanghai, there is a park where parents go to advertise their adult children for marriage with handwritten bios on umbrellas. Age, height, income level, and divorce status seem to be important factors. Also, none of the single adult children are there, it's all about the parents. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shanghai_marriage_market

So much truth. I had one who was jealous of my life, intelligence and accomplishments. He said "I'm a NICE man!!" (While berating me and trying to bring me down to his level of self-loathing). All projection and transference, not at all nice. Yay for cleansing ourselves of the icky parasites.

This happened to me! I listed used sandals online, and a scrote messaged me that he was "very attracted to" my feet, and it was unfortunate that my sandals were clean. Um, if he can only be gratified by filthy used sandals, try looking in dumpsters or along the side of the road? Another time, I was in line to sell clothes to a consignment shop, and a guy tried to sell the obviously-stolen contents of a woman's gym bag, including a hairdryer and pads. It was so unsettling to watch, I felt really …

Team black underwear! No period embarrassment or shame here in my life, I bleed proudly and the pain is easing up as I get older. Wish you all the best.

Sending you good energy and I'm so sorry you went through that. Yay for libraries and refuges of learning. My mom told me about periods in advance and kept pads stocked in the bathroom, but it was treated as an embarrassing time in our household, aka "mom isn't feeling well and needs to lie down with a heating pad". Her menstrual cycles were painful, as are my own. I've never liked pads or tampons, and the amount of plastic waste involved in menstruation products is concerning. Have you consider…

Yes you can do this! Your mom has good advice. I had my first solo car-buying experience last summer and it went very well. I had a specific car in mind, called the dealer and they had one with a different trim level, so I headed over to test drive and see if this car would be good. The sales guy was friendly and respectful, and through the test drive I decided that this was the exact car for me. Negotiations went smoothly, discounts were given and I'm only a tiny bit salty about the trade-in va…

She raised 3 sons and worked as a special-ed teacher. Handles the family finances. We have a long-term relationship of exchanging letters with stickers, drawings, poetry and the latest life updates. I love her so much.

Ugh, I had a professor like this in college. Bald, fat, short, unpleasant and creepy. I had to take a class from him as a requirement in my second year, and he kept encouraging me personally to come to office hours. I did not. In my senior year, I had to complete a yearlong team project and he was the assigned faculty advisor. 😒 During the first week of school, he dressed (at work!) like he'd just come from Burning Man, commented on my clothing and my body during our academic team meetings. It s…

I think he was referred to psychiatric care immediately. I saw him a few months later and he said he had been seeing a psychiatrist. It's hard for patients with psychotic delusions to get into care, because of the nature of the illness -- to them, the conspiracy situation is completely true and terrifying and consuming their life.

I have been to couples counseling and individual therapy in my last 3 relationships. The first time, my SO was going through some health issues and we wanted to tune up our communication. Our counselor was a man who coached us to understand each other's "yin and yang energy". We didn't see a need to go back to that counselor, and we were able to work out our communication issues. Unfortunately, the health issues turned out to be cancer. Then I was in a relationship with a man for 10 years, livin…

Yes, agreed! My libido disappeared until a recent night. I had a dream that I was going to the opera with NVX in a fancy hotel, I got lost in the architecture and couldn't find him, and I experienced a wave of pleasure at being alone without him bothering me.

I'm sorry he did that. I grabbed a veggie burger for dinner and as soon as I sat down in the park to eat it, an old man strolled by and yelled "I NEED DRUGS!" and then sat down on the bench near me and watched me eat. Instant appetite loss, I had to throw away my burger and run off. They are everywhere. :(

I'm new to FDS, but I recently expressed a strong concern to my male boss at a fortune 100. He responded to it and followed up with me today to report on progress. I'm cautiously optimistic about the response, hoping it goes in the right direction.

Excellent points. I work in a different male-dominated industry and for way too long I was the Corporate Cool Girl going along with all the "boys club" nonsense and misogyny. One time, a client refused to talk to me and demanded to speak with a male supervisor. I teamed up with my junior colleague (whom I was training) and had him do the talking while I directed him. We laughed about it later, but it was haha-sad. My most recent NVM ex is a junior attorney with the same attitude you describe... …

Oh noooo... I lived with That Guy who insisted on videogames because of his childhood. Consider the possibilities of their future... Even though he has her, he'll still need videogames "in this way" -- he needs to play RPGs as a female character that he designed with big boobs, booty, and a revealing costume. He'll want to talk to her about his gaming adventures in great detail, and several evenings a week will be prioritized for his in-game missions with gaming friends who take top priority. Wh…
