The fundamental mistake of feminism is not women's advocacy- which is essential. It is the tacit claim that men will attempt to serve men's interests. In other words, the idea that sexes are analogous to classes or nations. This error prevents them from seeing real relations between sexes and how they construct each other.

States themselves have not been the prevalent social form for most of human history. And I would argue that native American and other aboriginal cultures are anti tyrannical so often that the tyrannical ones are very notable, Also even some of the nastiest native empires were not tyrannical toward their own people, just outsiders/ other nations. There is an anti tyrannical impulse we can see even in other primates I would argue it is old, that it evolved. Not in any way to deny the tyrannical po…

Well, agree to disagree I guess. I am not sure about NZ, but school in the US has always taught to support grotesque violence from leaving workers on the street to starve to committing genocide or crimes against humanity in latin america or Vietnam. I think they are just finding new groups to target with this violence.

This guy is wrong: Functionally speaking a government made up of 1000 equally powerful politicians and a government made up of 1 dictator is exactly the same. Really? if Those politicians are elected to represent their constituencies and do effectively represent them, this is wrong. If I am advocating for an authoritarian system to its maximum degree that would mean the government would have direct and total authority over the economy- this effectively makes the government socialist. Wrong. Soci…

I have decades studying it though study groups, activism, and debating with/mentoring from academics, and adult courses. But I am not an academic. I have never enrolled in a uni and have no degree.

Another example would be warlords in totally unregulated third world countries. They rule through force, and wherever you are you will be under the rule of one of them, but the economy is total wild west unregulated, just one big black market, lax or no regulations on the environmental and labor front, with farmers and workers movements suppressed.

It is clearly not impossible to be authoritarian an economic right, it is extremely common. Dictators like Pinochet in Argentina, the Nazis (who changed more industry from public sector to private sector than anyone ever had) are examples from history. Countries like Singapore come to mind for the present day.

You are supposed to downvote if someone is not adding content, not because you cant take disagreement. I have decades in political science while you are using media propaganda and culture war definitions, which is why you think i don't know what I am talking about. But from an international perspective, actual policy , and an academic one, what I am saying is evidence based and more mainstream. I am not bashing real conservatives or real leftists. How are the democrats left, when you just said that they are liberals. Do you know that liberals are not left? They are centrists (except for classical liberals who are conservative). Look at the political compass. https://www.politicalcompass.org/ Who is more anti socialist, in any western countries than the democrats? Again look at Biden. https://www.politicalcompass.org/uselection2020

The republicans are right wing but they are not conservative. Conservatives are not anti union, anti science and warmongering. They are just into small government, free trade and free market. The republicans have been into corporate freebies and corporate monopoly, fixed markets, war, and spending more money than the Democrats since at Reagan. The Democrats are center right. They are not left wing at all. They are anti free speech, anti labor, anti-socialist ( party of wall street), and war hawk…

For American readers, public school in UK = fancy private school in US. That's what should prove to everyone that Woke-ism is not "socialist" or "communist" , it is happening mainly among the rich. You can see the big corporations get on board too. Costs em nothing. They are talking this nonsense and running witchhunts because it makes the working class weaker.

Only the first paragraph was supposed to be a definition. It is the private ownership of means of production, and legalization of private property, in order to make citizens into workers and extract profit by paying less than the total value of the labour.

One good approach to this was in Ethics, by Alain Badiou, a French communist philosopher and mathematician. He argued that everyone is different, because that is what the world is, it's difference. You may have more in common with an Eskimo than with your own brother, personality wise, political views, life goals, taste in music, whatever. So, respect for the different experience of the other doesn't mean anything at all. Everyone is other and different. It follows that what is meaningful is to …

Not total bullshit. As a politics or even an epistemology it is total bullshit. But IIRC it was originally supposed to be only a pedagogical exercise. Like going around in a wheelchair for a day to see what if feels like to be looked at as disabled.

Only some zones of capitalism need to be orderly, others should be disorderly. 2008 symbolizes large swaths of the west waking up to being part of a disordered raw extraction zone like the Congo.

That isn't a definition of capitalism. It is just saying what type of thing it is. Capitalism is an unstable social system based on the private ownership of social production. Meaning : making money from other people's work, so they can't govern and control their own work and work products and so they have to sell themselves to the owners to get back a piece of the value they created. It exploits people and nature by not fully paying them for their labour so as to reap the difference in profit a…

It isn't clear to me that because most suicides are male that suicide is a men's issue. It isn't clear to me that having men's and women's " issues " that educators study up on in a way the average person never will, then raise consciousness, is a winning strategy. The more issues can be just seen as civil rights or healthcare issues, not gendered, issues the better. Yes, so many issues are falsely propagandized as affecting primarily women, leaving men without resources. But n't it better to re…

I don't see the parallels. It sounds like an anti communist conspiracy theory mixed with a reasonable, and possibly Marxist, critique of intersectional critical theory. The USSR's fake elections are not special to them at all, and were a core feature of anticommunism also from Indonesia to Argentina. The intolerance for deviation you are talking about, among elites, in the USSR is not more than the US or other super powers. It was more for its ordinary citizens, if that is what we are talking ab…

The problem is those other people are still there. Their beliefs have evolved also but within the original definition Clearly they were a massive movement 100 years ago, and numerically small now but non socialist "libertarians" are small now as well. Marxist professors are persecuted in American colleges, including Marxists profs who teach capitalist economics classes with good reviews from students. Look at the U of Vermont case. Or ask Richard Wolff. The one thing you don't learn in the US school system is Marx. Critical race theory, intersectionality, etc are NOT Marxism. But students SHOULD Be studying Marx and Smith, Ricardo, Kant, Descartes, JS Mill, Nietzsche, Jesus, Buddha, and everyone else etc etc.

3 hours minimum is good. Hunter gatherers in Africa worked 15 hour weeks. Keynes predicted 15 hour weeks by the end of the 20th century, that never came. The increase in productivity in workers since the 70s is many fold, just staggering, due to better tech. But people now work more days a year than medieval serfs did.

None of what you wrote leads to an "um, no". Feminism has had some positive results is my premise. It does not require all or most feminist rhetoric to be true. It does not require that men be privileged. You can't sum a social movement up in national laws, let alone in only some countries. Nor in a conference in New York State. There were cultural changes, grassroots and street level movements. Many ideas maybe most were bad. But social reality is more complicated that that. Results are not red…

With respect, i don't think you understand these terms, which is not to say that your orientation is not better. And to be fair these terms are obscure. As far leftist I would disagree with you about left intolerance. I think the reason is I have a narrow idea of what the left is-I only consider communists, socialists, anarchists as left. SJWS are not left wing I think. The kind of left reddit I follow is stupidpol. The "activist" left, and the social democratic liberal left are very divisive, posturing, hysterical, and censorious, but since I dont see them really building workers movements then I do not see them as left. https://www.reddit.com/…

There are a lot of examples of freedom opening up for women in 20th century feminism. A friend teaches at MIT and there just were almost no women professors there is the 50s. Abortions were dangerous or illegal. Women had little access to many sports. I could go on. If my girlfriend commits a crime, I don't get in trouble like if my dog bites someone. Old school feminism has some accomplishments to the extent it expanded civil rights What's wrong with feminism is obvious to all of us on an MRA R…

It arguably was in some ways. I am agnostic on this question. History is very messy and good comes with bad. Womens liberation is good, and feminism overlapped somewhat with women's liberation. We can all imagine better ways of opening up freedom and dignity than the feminist way, but history unfolded according to the possibilities of the time. What we can agree on is that we can come up with something better than feminism today.

I agree with this. Seeing this as a personal choice is missing the point completely. If she exploited the workers at a less brutal rate, hell even if she paid them in limos per hour, it would not make her message less hypocritical or fantastical. Pointing out that the whole industry uses sweatshops is way more useful and enlightening, and actually let's her off the hook LESS than asking her to totally symbolically set up a token non sweat shop company.

Saying they aren't held accountable is a huge understatement. They are largely invisible. Many people don't know women sexuality assault at all. And I would bet that many many rapes of men by women are covered up by women immediately falsely reporting she was raped.

One interesting thing is how they believe women are more oppressed than men, ie. they think that it then follows denying men rights is OK. Upon noticing two house fires, the fire brigade doesn't let one of them burn just because the other is larger- they handle both of them. I wonder if you could strategically go ahead and agree with them that women are more oppressed, as a way to take the power out of their anti male arguments. Edited for a typo

What you are missing is that A. There IS a patriarchy And B. It is constructed not by men but by women ( through mate choice and child rearing for their benefit ). No it's not. Marxism notes more than just 2 classes. Classical feminism does not. Marxism also praises the bourgeoisie and considers capitalism the best society created so far, feminism does not do this for patriarchy. There is confusion here. What you are describing is accurate, but wouldn't be possible if the brain were a blank slate. The thing influenced by early childhood experiences has to be dynamic in order to respond to them, so it has to come already loaded with features. There just isn't enough data in the experience of sweet food or a slap or a phrase to create complex bahavior sets, personalities and concepts around them. We are moldable at all only because we are not blank slates.

Well done. Two comments: Most people lived in barter economies? From what i have learned, these never existed. Barter was just for external relations and travelers, but inside society nobody used barter it was almost all credit. Also agriculture? most of human history was hunting/gathering and or horticulture wasn"t it?

You realise that was 30 years ago, and it was seen as the wages of fame? A famous woman could've done it too. Not even about rich or males. Edit: 30 years ago was the cultural / political difference between 1989 and 1959, ie A lot, if that helps

Why is that weird? Would it be weird to date someone your own age who moved to your hometown when she was 25? She arrived 25 years after you. Weird? Adulthood is something you arrive at.

The stylistic issue i have with this is the stats. They aren't reliable unless the country or area they are for are named, and any difference makes them look arbitrary, weakening the point.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
