Mark Walhberg's character is a beta disguising as a shiny alpha. His actions are as pathetic as beta Will. Obviously he's got nothing going for him and he hadn't improved himself through the years so he has to come crawling back, trying hard to impress his ex and kids. Like a high school jock who didn't realise he's stagnated since high school and is now a beta himself.

It just means be alpha 'bad', not asshole 'bad'. But we use the phrase in regards to chicks in relationships with assholes too (e.g. Gangsters). As long as 'bad' produces tingles. Like you said, awalt regardless of geography or tradition. Don't have to overthink it.
