Perhaps you're right, I'm not qualified to say. I do know that if it was me in that situation, I probably wouldn't sacrifice myself for anyone but I think that's probably more to do with being cowardly than being independent.

No because I think people who say things like that are just adding to the problem. Look, maybe I'm completely wrong, maybe I've just been lucky to be surrounded by good people, I don't know. What I do know is that this idea that just one characteristic defines who you are is ridiculous. Some of the best people I've ever met were women, some of the worst were men. Oh definitely. Honestly, I'm assuming that they had been harassing him for a long time unprovoked because he took things waaay to far. If they had just been kicking him a bit, he should have gotten up and moved far away. If they followed, then maybe that's when self defense becomes okay but you're absolutely right.
