It's not just about what people are eating, or how much, but also timing. In the 1960s, 85% of Americans consumed calories at breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and outside of mealtimes, consumed no calories. By the 1990s, a significant minority of Americans were consuming calories 5 or more times per day. Today, a majority of Americans are consuming calories 5 or more times per day; 10% of the U.S. population is consuming calories 10 or more times per day.

I think the response was actually good. While it was couched in a lot of misandrist statements, "all men are trash" etc., she did point out to the writer that she needs to look at herself, that she is part of the equation. She encourages the writer to take some responsibility for the situation.

Gas and food prices are rising due to supply chain disruptions and a resuming of economic activity. These would still be happening under a second Trump administration. The only thing that would be different if Trump were still president is maybe those stimulus checks wouldn't have gone out. Y'all need to relax. And turn off the Fox propaganda channel.

What you do is you point out that since astrology was developed thousands of years ago, the movement of the solar system through the galaxy has shifted the position of the Earth relative to the constellations. And hence, all the charts are now wrong. So she's actually a Gemini when she thinks she's a Taurus. Then sit back and watch the wheels spin.

The cost of the car is only the beginning. I rented a Mustang once when my own car was getting repaired (it was the only car available at that moment at the one car rental place in my village). It got like 10 miles per gallon = 4.25 km per liter. Fun car, but even with cheap U.S. gasoline, wow...

Well, you've only been married a month, any financial damage from a divorce will be minimal. She will do it again. For any person, the best predictor of future behavior is past behavior. Unless she does serious psychotherapy and works out the reasons why she did it, and is genuine in her desire to not repeat the behavior, then it's pretty much guaranteed that she'll do it again. This applies to anyone who commits bad acts.

To be fair, at the time, Irish people (Catholics in general) were not considered white. There was a time not too far ago in U.S. history when "white" meant northern European, Protestant, English/Germanic/Scandinavian. The definition of "white" has changed over time. Today, "white" means basically anyone who is pale and does not appear to have African or indigenous heritage. People have forgotten that in 1960, there was a debate going on in the U.S.: could we actually elected a Catholic man as pr…

You don't push for mandatory DNA tests to determine paternity. You push for mandatory DNA tests to screen for genetic variants and disease susceptibility in infants, under the guise of enhancing health outcomes for newborns, with no mention that this information could also be used to determine paternity.

Cancelling student debt without first changing the system that caused the debt problem in the first place will just ensure that we're back to the same problem in 20 years. Make new student loans dischargeable through bankruptcy just like other debt. This will turn off the spigot of easy money Convert current student loans into zero interest government loans that still have to be paid off.

Monument Valley in southern Utah/northern Arizona. I was on a road trip through southeastern Utah back in the 90s and heading back to SoCal. I noticed that Utah Rt. 261 looked like a straight shot north-south on the paper map I was using, except for one tiny section of the road that looked like a zig zag and was gravel instead of pavement. So sure, that's weird, let's check that out. After driving south for a long while through some pretty unimpressive desert, I got to that section of the road. …

A few years ago, there was a segment on 60 Minutes about this. You take the position that an individual’s life begins at conception, that a specific person pops into existence at that moment, but with identical twins, there’s only one conception, but two distinct human beings are the result. It seems that the fertilization of an egg creates a potential for one or more human beings, but it won’t be known until later how many that will be (zero, one, two, etc). A majority of women are functionally infertile by the age of 35 (meaning that they can't get pregnant via standard intercourse without medical assistance). There is certainly multiple causes for this, but I'd imagine that egg quality deteriorating over time is a factor. (Interestingly, birth control pills prevent ovulation and thus preserve egg quality, because the better eggs are released first.) This woman waited until her late thirties to have the egg harvesting procedure done, which involves…

If stopping by a non-bathroom mirror was the only way to see your reflection and evaluate yourself, then this anecdote might mean something. This is like saying "Women are more into fitness/in better shape overall than men because they spend X% more time in the gym on elliptical machines compared to men."

I'd think that any type of in-group/guild/union protective mentality that exists in a particular state bar would be counterbalanced by the understanding that attorneys are, by and large, despised in society, and that the reputation of the profession has to be defended. (You know that old joke, "what do you call 10K lawyers at the bottom of the ocean? A good start." Lol.) Thus an attorney accused of a criminal act shouldn't expect leniency from the bar. But I may be wrong.

I think that's definitely true in terms of attorneys being accused of malpractice by disgruntled former clients, but criminal wrongdoing by attorneys is not tolerated, from what I've seen

Funny thing about being a lawyer is that you have to completely stay out of trouble. I have a friend from law school who got a DWI in his third year of law school and as much trouble as that is for a regular non-lawyer person, it's ten times more hassle for a member of the bar (which you are, technically, from the first day of law school onward (in school, you're a "provisional" member - this is in California)). No amount of "troubles" she could put you into would compare to what you could do to…
