I did more reading and it seems like in general this can be true but someone would have to adopt your child/take your place as custodial parent.

I was under the impression that in most states you can sign over your parental rights and do not have to have any legal or financial responsibility to a child. This of course does not solve everything, there would be some level of attachment once an actual baby was born making that decision wildly challenging, but men do have a right to give up their parenting rights- women do too!
