There is a really good documentary on Amazon called "Uncle Tom" that I would recommend. I grew up in a single mother household and was staunchly Democratic most of my early life. As I matured I recognized that we live in the most opportunistic country in the world for a reason, and handouts was not because of it. Uncle Tom addresses the importance of fathers and the roles they play in children's lives (amongst others things).
