Yeah, I think the adrenaline junkie aspect is a huge part of it. Idpol-types tend to be addicted to the rage that comes from righteous indignation, which is only amplified in an echo chamber. Those who don't go to an exteme idpol sub/community to seethe and become upset eventually become that way because the echo chamber just highlights the worst and most extreme cases of white ppl/men/Westerners/etc, making it seem like their terribleness is the norm. We've seen this exact thing happen with the…

Exactly my thoughts and well said. With your last point, I particularly get the sense that a lot of identity-based movements are more concerned with venting their anger at injustice and wanting to feel some kind of catharsis instead of actually wanting to do the difficult and dispassionate work of making change. Bitching doesn't solve problems though and the short-term high that comes from bullying and making enemies is not how long-term and sustainable progress is made. In the end, they end up …

I think punching up makes sense when it's justified. Take the French revolution as an obvious example. Punching up is great idea when class is involved because that's when it is needed. As for your second point, I agree that the Left's minor sidestep away from a pure class based analysis to include a more nuanced perspective that incorporates race, gender, etc. was hijacked. Our political acitvities have become less about raising class conciousness and more about building an identity around our …

This is sad for obvious reasons, but the biggest dissapointment for me right now is that I don't see the current left being able to mobilize to fight the right. We have too many idiots and too much infighting. The nuanced and insightful arguments that came out of intersectionaliy's origins have been lost and replaced by angry reactionaries happy to "punch up" all day, while actually doing nothing to better the material conditions of the poor (unless the poor belong to their demographic). But eve…

Poor example OP. They aren't defending that sub. What they are doing however is classic "women are wonderful" rationalizing as to why that sub exists in the first place. They think the sub is for men LARPing as women because they cannot imagine women being shitty like men. It says a lot about their understanding of people and how sexist and condescending they are to women.

Thanks for this post. The main issue is that up until recently, the alt-right were the only people willing to talk about the same hypocrital and unfair frameworks that we talk about. Of course, the alt-right's ideas are weak, but because they addressed the concerns of people discarded by the modern left, they were able to swell their ranks. They are smart enough to know how to prey on disaffected young men who feel like they don't belong in today's world. And they have a pipeline in place to rec…

It's great to have you here. I think your story echoes the experiences of pretty much everyone else. It's great that we aren't the only people who've noticed these false dichotomies between the sexes. We can be pro-male and pro-female, without succumbing to praising one and bashing the other as society would have you believe.

It is very good that you are seeing a therapist. I'd also suggest taking the time to journal your thoughts if you haven't already.

That's a nice list you've already made. I'd also suggest that as a man, I'm expected to be the "emotional rock" of the relationship. I think women have more of a free reign to explore the depths of their emotions and process them more openly than men. Deviating from a sort of stoic demeanor in the face of challenge is severely frowned upon. Doing so, in my experience, often damages the relationship as your aren't fulfilling your job of being an anchor or foil for the woman's emotions.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
