I think maybe you should focus on getting her number first before you have any real conversations about politics, future plans, whatever conversations you would rather be having than 'how are you' or 'favorite (insert anything)'... From my experience it has always been easier to get decent conversations going, that are not about the weather, if I've had lots of small talk with someone in the past.. and texting seems, to me at least, the easy way of getting over that hill.
