An interesting idea I heard for getting used to touching women while talking was to spend a weekend forcing yourself to act like the "creepy touchy feely guy". The suggested lesson to learn from this is that a woman's idea on what is acceptable is much higher than many men believe.

Was talking to a girl while seated. She made a comment about feeling fat, I reached in and playfully pinched her side and gave a sarcastic "oh yeah, so fat" remark. She laughed and was all smiles. If she is interested, she WANTS you to touch her body.

Yea, jealousy is a bitch. That's why recognizing that reality is so important in approaching. I'm not entirely sure how the situation went down, but from your description, you might have tried engaging the set by directly asking the bitchy friend (without ever looking at the hot friend) what she thought about the scenario.
