Regarding other men being around your little girls - there’s a point where you will need to let go of that anxiety because you can’t control what she does. All you can do is pay very close attention to what your girls say about the people your ex brings into their lives, and push for what’s right when you hear things that are going south. It’s very painful to build up to that acceptance, but it is possible.

For me I took long walks around my neighborhood and called up old friends and family and chatted for hours. Sometimes to get advice about the divorce, other times just to shoot the shit. The act of walking AND talking had an incredibly calming effect.

I always get a Mother’s Day card and Birthday card for my ex wife, and let my daughter hand it to her each time and say it’s from her and Daddy. This has so far been unreciprocated. I’m past that, mostly. The most important thing is that my daughter learns “it’s the thought that counts”.

I wanted to save mine. She didn’t. That cut deeply.

My lawyer was smart and drafted most of this into our parenting plan. My stbxw’s lawyer hasn’t made any redlines to it though, and I suspect they are going to fight 50/50 at mediation. It makes me very sad.

Mediation is scheduled soon. I’ll report back when it’s all done. But, I’m living in the house we share and I’m present and there for our young kid. Establishing the status quo so 50/50 is no brainer. My state is a no-fault 50/50 state so I think my chances are very good.

A clean house is so crucial, imo. The house I had with my stbxw was never clean or organized, despite my best efforts. Any attempt I made to clean things up was met with anger and frustration that she couldn't find something or other, even after I gave her plenty of warning that I was planning on doing some cleaning.

I followed these steps. While my marriage of 10 years began to end amicably, when I asserted what I wanted, such as 50/50 custody of our kids, she lost her mind. Therapy, and close friends that Ive known for years, have helped me tremendously. Being with people who care about you is paramount - and don't let your stbxw make you feel guilty for having an outlet like mine does.

This is a good strategy. It's effectively a type of journaling at that point.

Mine began amicable, but when I asked for 50/50 custody of our kid, my stbxw screamed at me and forced me out of the room. I consider myself a loving and present father that spends a lot of time with my kid outside of work. I was flabbergasted.

This is the tactic I use. I stay fun dad and play hard with my daughter. We talk about space, NASA, Sesame Street, her classes her mom takes her to, etc. When I have a weak moment and my kid senses I am sad, I acknowledge it, but then tell her that she makes me happy, and get right back to playing. All the while, when mom comes up, i speak of her positively to encourage healthy relationships. It’s hard as fuck. But I’m making it happen.

Therapy is helping me a great deal, as well as speaking to close friends that have seen my relationship with my wife from the very beginning to the very end. You are not alone, and it is not weak to seek help through therapy.

I had made this determination before reading this post, but upon reading it I feel validated. Thanks op! I just cannot accept the loss of time with my beautiful 2 year old daughter. And I want to show the judge, mediators, and my lawyer that I give a shit. When looking at it in this way, my soon-to-be-ex wife's constant judgement and aggressive behavior are easy to deflect. Be the calm oak tree, gentlemen. It can weather the storm.

Im currently in the midst of divorce myself (initiated by my ex, but I filed first due to some shenanigans on her side). My soon to be ex and I still live together in our house, and we have a nearly-3 year old daughter. Im worried for this outcome myself. In my state, 50/50 custody is also the norm. I have made it clear that I will not settle for less, and I refuse to move out of our home (which we originally agreed my ex will keep) until we have it in writing. While it's hard to see my ex every…
