They are all rewarding careers, but I would say some skills are more in demand than others. The trades I would recommend are Electricians, Pipefitters, Operating Engineers, Carpenters, Sheet Metal Workers, Ironworkers, and Boilermakers.

Quit supporting your ex and her kid. If she tries to take you through the courts for child support, tell the judge that you are pretty confident that the child isn't yours. I'm sure he will order a paternity test to determine whether or not your the kid is yours. In the meantime, kick her the fuck out of your house. It's under your name, not hers. You should absolutely pursue the union trade first since the schooling is free. You don't necessarily have to have any trade experience as the purpose of an apprenticeship program is to mold you into a skilled tradesmen. In other words, they don't expect you to know much. I would recommend getting with the Canadian United Association of Plumbers, Fitters, Welders, and Service Techs (UA). You can research it here: http://www.ua.org/canada These are the union jobs that usually pay pretty well. Plus, if you pass the entrance requirements, then they put you through apprenticeship school and the whole time, you're earning a living. I would give that advice to anyone who wants to get ahead in the skilled trades. The thing about specialty contractors that typically work as subs (i.e. plumbers, electricians, roofers, sheet metal workers, etc.) is that you typically top out as site supervisor for your particular craft and only run a crew composed of people in your particular trade. It all depends where you live and the cost of land. Typically new homes today go for roughly $125 per square foot in the Midwest. The same house in San Francisco can cost more than triple the cost. Her mother has no idea about where I stand financially. She's never taken me to court to try and extract more money from me. Since I drive an old truck, live in a tiny condo, and don't appear to be well off, she probably assumes that I am just getting by.
