I'm sure you know but... Asia is like Europe in that there's a huge difference between the countries. Where you are in Asia doesn't matter because all women are untrustworthy. Having worked in HVAC and plumbing it's not all that great. It can pay very well and is a skill set you can carry with you anywhere but the atmosphere sucks balls. If you're good with working with your hands and don't mind getting them dirty I recommend carving logs using a chainsaw. Pine sap gets everywhere but you're free to get creative and tourist are nuts with what they'll pay.

I agree on every point you made, he seems like the kind of guy that I'd want to buy a beer for and not someone I'd think of as unstable.
