It sounds to me it's the social proof you feel you're lacking. When you are on your own you can't say 'I'm just here with my friends'. You need to be your own social proof. You should love spending time by yourself just as much as friends. In the end you are the only one you should have to 'fall back on'.

I once found a really good audio book by an English PUA. It was mainly for beginner / intermediates but it was solid and covered everything. I've since lost it and haven't been able to find it since. He had a black country accent and it was the first time I heard the slang 'ditch pig'.
