Oh you're definitely so right that the current system also leaves the door wide open for fascism. Part of me feels like we're already watching it walk in.

I think a lot of young people don't realize that part of Real Communism is relinquishing the means of production to the government. They also don't realize the dangers of establishing a new government in a post revolution power vacuum. They're only looking at the part that where the government helps poor people and regulates businesses against doing harm (in theory!) which is nice, but there are other ways to achieve those things without leaving the door open for fascism.
