Actually they did come out ahead. this was juuust pre 2008 where they made money on the old house and the new house came out about the same and with the bit of surplus managed to pay down the credit cards. Actually the only thing they got fucked by was our builder. The guy took for ever and because we werent able to move out of the old house faster, it cost us a lot as the market fell. Basically upgraded for free.
